From my experience, the ripper is not a great choice if you want something dead now. Perhaps if you upgrade it to the max. . .

Well, that's what I'm doing. Four more upgrades and it'll have maximum damage. I figure that it'll be good against the wall-huggers because I can just run up to them and saw them to death without expending much ammo.

Playing normal I never had a slasher tuck its arms into its body so you couldn't shoot them off. It happened constantly (to me) on impossible.
If you shoot off one of their legs first, they'll be prime for dismembering. I don't think they have any countermeasures against that.

I thought the ripper might be decent once it was maxed out. I was proved horribly wrong, it is hands down the worst weapon in the game.
You'll have a bit of a fight on your hands during the parts with 2 wall-necros or the ones that've already deployed a bunch of pods.

This I discovered as well. I also hated how it was forcing me to get Ripper ammo for most of my pickups, so I just sold it, bought a ton of power nodes, and maxed out my Stasis in one go. Hopefully, by only picking up Pulse Rifle ammo I'll have enough to kill the guardians.

I carried the line gun the whole game and stockpiled enough ammo that towards the 2nd half of the game it was an excellent replacement for my other weapons which were quickly running dry. The game seems to give you ammo based on what you're carrying, and also it gives you ammo based on what you're USING.

I'm in chapter 7 now, the part where I have to shoot rocks into a gravity beam. Did I maybe run past any stasis chargers on the way? Because I'm out of stasis and I'd rather spend the credits on buying power nodes or ammo (plus it'd be a waste of credits to buy stasis packs when there is a stasis charger nearby).
As a side note, I've given the pulse rifle another chance, it is proving to be pretty effective at finishing off wounded enemies (and once I upgrade it some more it'll be ready for intense combat I bet). Though the line gun is hands down the most powerful I got, I kill fx. slashers and crawlers in 1 - 2 shots.

Assuming you think you need stasis for the rocks, you don't, just grab them and chuck them into the beam.
I just got by there today, there weren't any chargers. Once you proceed to the next floor there'll be one though.

Nah, I just wanted to have stasis handy for dealing with bad guys. If I know Dead Space correctly I'll be attacked when I toss the rocks into the gravity beam.

Yes. Yes you will.

If you're a good shot, it shouldn't be too difficult. Just stay by the panel after you hit it, and don't get focused on one direction you're being attacked from.
