That scene makes no sense either, for some odd reason the hull of the Ishimura suddenly becomes very sensitive to asteroid impacts as soon as you sit down in front of the cannon. In my opinion this was a poorly thought out scene which I could easily have lived without.

hmm, since you start off with <80% hull integrity it could be argued that you arrived there already after the damage started. you are the cause of it anyways since you fired up the engine the chapter before. but I wouldn't give it much thought (logic-wise). And yeah, this shooting stuff is not the best idea, the canon is used much better in a later chapter. but such is the concession to a "game", many times in DeadSpace you are told to make a run for it because this or that is exploding or being squashed by asteroids but still you have enough time to loot all crates and corpses before proceeding to the next level. I guess nobody would be that insane to include an countdown timer for EVERY level including the bossfight. Would be very frustrating to beat some boss but then still die 'cause you didn't get it quick enough. There's no countdown in impossible diff. either if that would be your next question. Just more necros and more hitpoints.

This asteroids part is stupid. I died six or seven times before I gave up for the night; I guess I'll try again tomorrow, but man, didn't the devs realize that a joystick is just not accurate enough to do this sort of thing?

'More accurate' does not necessarily mean 'better'. Gamepads are more fun.
So you're not having fun with the asteriods, then? :p

Do my eyes decieve me or is Aja complaining about a controller?
Because that shit is easy with a mouse.

I do know that this is over-analyzing, but the game was doing such a good job at suspension of disbelief for me until the cannon part. Hell, the latter cannon fight takes it even further;
the slug throws a few pieces of spacecrap and the entire starship blows up, while a big ship like the Valor can crash right into Ishimura and only damage the cargo bay area.
It isn't really the idea that is bad, but the way it was executed. I just don't think a simple "Ishimura has 100 health and asteroids deal x damage on impact" works too well.

Timers can work if the player gets enough time to figure out where to go and how to best do it. Nothing is more frustrating than scenes where the only way to get past is to die countless times as you memorize the path and enemy locations room by room.

but you got the breadcrumb system !
I'm not saying I would have wanted it in there. I sure could do without the cannon parts. actually all the boss encounters are more less: learn the pattern and then you don't loose any health. on impossible one 1 hit can bring you down forever if you don't have the right rig or spent nodes on your hp

Hey, I recognize the limitations of my medium. But you know, even with a mouse, this shooting gallery shit is more chore than fun.
june gloom on 27/4/2009 at 18:35
It is, I'll give you that. It's just a fuck of a lot easier with a mouse.

Took a couple of tries but I eventually beat that fucking asteroids sequence. I'm playing the game on the pc with my xbox 360 pad but for that scene I had to switch to the mouse. Even then it was hell - the gun is completely unresponsive and it lasts way longer than it should.
That said, I can forgive that arcade moment of the game because, ladies and germs - i just entered Level 5 Hydroponics. Yes, when you walk into the room with the two glass tubes and the weird bearded guy tells you to witness your future...yes i was smug and felt happy when i shot the big bastard thing down and it collapsed into a bloody heap...then i proceeded to shit myself when it regenerated and got up all the while i'm running around trying to escape...
I'm a devout keyboard/mouse combo guy but I can see how the pad is infinately more enjoyable to use in games like this...

I only use the breadcrumbs if I get terribly stuck, which didn't happen too often. ;)
And yeah, it is more about learning patterns than being skilled when dealing with bosses. Though mini-bosses like our friend we first meet in ch. 5 was pretty challenging, it really gets the heartbeat up when one is locked in a room with that thing plus some minions. :)
