I would only agree on the movement, hiding skills and jumping skills as inspirations from AC for Thief 4..:p
Garrett works at night, and is sometimes...almost...antisocial ! Altair isn't though :erg: :p (at least I think) So most ideas apart from movement skills and all that, taken from AC to put into Thief 4, would not work. It would ruin the sense of Thief...a legendary game in my opinion....and make it in to some sort of...Garrett The Assassin. Wrong wrong wrong.
..and if EM dares to put up a DRM/Constant internet connection for Thief 4, I'm gonna scream. :mad:That's one thing that would be insane, crappy, lame, so-not-awesome to copy from AC...well, AC2. :p

I think I agree the most (not to say that I don't agree with other points) with a small point that you made.
SUB MENU'S ARE TERRIBLE.
I just don't care for sub-menu's at all. Readables SHOULD be opened on the fly, you're absolutely right. I think The Dark Mod handled it amazingly by even remaining in real time. 100% kept me in the experience.

b) Map Markers.
Agreed on everything except this. While I do love the intel gathering you mention, I also like being able to use the map and compass as proper tools to plan my next move. Additionally, being prepared in that way helps define Garrett's character as a professional thief.
No compass markers though, that would just ruin it.

I also disagree on the Garrett-is-unknown-until-TDS-came thing, just because there were too many people in TMA shouting Garrett's name when they SAW him.
I must admit I didn't get seen very often, but the only one I noticed shouting Garrett's name was Karras. Did you count the cutscenes too?
Beleg Cúthalion on 29/5/2010 at 18:31
No, it's usually thieves and the like IIRC. Still, the whole City Watch was after him in TMA.

EM has mentioned this game as an inspiration for T4.
I just threw up in my mouth a little.
I actually like Assassin's Creed... the first one, at any rate... but I like it for what it is.

4) CombatPlease don't. Just...don't.
A friend of a friend was actually one of the designers of Assassin's Creed's
original combat system, which from what I've been told, was much more reminiscent of Thief. You had to carefully time your guarding and striking, you would die in one or two hits... and actually if you look at the early E3 tech demos of the game, you'll see that was the case.
However, apparently the whole combat system was scrapped because it was 'too hard' (read: required brain power) and replaced with the overhauled Prince of Persia B.S. you see today.

I am really concerned about Thief IV being dumbed down for console gamers. The level of interaction that Thief games demand is just not possible to achieve using a gamepad. Maybe its possible, but it'll be too difficult for couch gamers.
That's why I think the PC version, specially the control should be designed from ground up and not just ported.
I heard that these days most multi-platform games are designed/ developed to run on Xbox first. Then the PS3 branch of development gets some attention. And finally minimal changes and efforts are put in to port it to PC.
I hope EM is not doing this with Thief IV. There are thousands of crap games to keep console/ couch gamers happy. Does Thief IV really need to be just one of those games? Or should it be true to its origin and become one of the most well made PC game of all time?

I wouldn't like to see Garret get incredible movement and jumping skills. Garret's a thief. His job is to stay out of sight, not perform incredible feats of acrobatics. Giving the player to quickly move from place to place like Altaiir, or hide anywhere like Sam Fisher would reduce the need to stay hidden.

That's simply not true. When I played T1 for the first time, I played it without a mouse at all, just keyboard (my old mechanical mouse was irritatingly sticking all the time, so I discarded it). I also tried to play it via gamepad and had no problems at all. I tried to render it in 640x480 using TV-out too — it does look good on it. It's not much a technical problem, but more about catering to different target audience.
