From this point on D.E's environments become totally surreal. The caverns seem to go on for far too long, so I am wondering if he's going to shorten it up or just add more things to make it interesting.
The caverns
need to be long.
1. It prevents multiple audio triggers.
2. It makes sense in the story - the caverns are basically a long orphic journey through the underworld
3. The soundtrack in that part is just superb, and it would be a waste to miss most of it ;)

All good points. :)

I got the impression he did the big server bit, which was indeed great looking (as was all his stuff in the rest), but that and stormdrains (which he apparently did to) I found a bit meh gameplay wise is all
I can agree with that to an extent. Fortunately, that's not going to be an issue with DE.
Also, good point about the soundtrack, vH. I definitely wouldn't want that track (or any of the others) chopped or edited in any way.

I hope something is done about the footsteps sounds. With all that hiking, they are quite loud and you can't help but notice that each type of surface you walk on has barely three different sounds randomly looping. I'd like to see them go quieter and slower, leave the jogger speed for a real walk.

Incredible, both for the visual quality, source's ability to look like that in 2010, and for his commitment to Dear Esther.

Is that... Source? Someone pinch me.
mothra on 30/6/2010 at 07:20
anyone seen the portal 2 videos ? source is still amazing if you have the talent and experience. valve will keep slapping on new shaders and tweaks until .... I don't know: HL3 comes out or hell freezes over. But seeing the above DearEsther clip - masterclass.

I find it kind of funny that he's still doing the Before/After screenshots, as there's just no comparison to be made.
And maybe I'm alone in this, but (
http://www5.picturepush.com/photo/a/3713998/img/DE-29-06-2010/020.jpg) this screenshot gets me all giddy. He's not just embedding cars in the walls, he's got an
entire highway down there.
Digital Nightfall on 30/6/2010 at 08:17
I got the idea that he did it just to be cheeky. I actually appreciated it - I remember the caves being rather bland and poorly designed, but I don't remember them being that bad. He probably found some of the worst areas to snap just for a lark.
I can't wait to see what's up with that highway. :weird:
Also, dunno if any of you saw, but he's considering going retail with this. I can't argue with that.
