At one point it occurred to me that the proximity-to-terrain thing might be the problem. But while playing Three Crowns, I climbed a lot of free hanging ropes, and they flung me just as far away. I'll have to download Love Story 4 and see if it happens with fixed ropes, too. I know it DIDN'T happen with ladders or fixed vines and the like. Haven't checked out vine arrows yet. Now I'm curious about it.
As Nightwalker suggested, I'm hitting the Alt-s before leaping onto any rope.

I have only experienced this in Thief Gold. Even in Thief Gold I found it particularly difficult to even get onto a rope. Thief 2 is relatively easy - I run and shoot at the same time and then jump with no problems.

It's been suggested (proven?) that jumping on the rope while it's swinging increases your chance of having a problem.
I've never received damage from being thrown at a hard surface, nor even been thrown hard, or far, from jumping on a rope. I have been bucked off.
Also, the problem does happen less often in T2, but redleaf's situation is uncommon.
I don't know if this is related, but playing Thief on my newer laptop has exaggerated some anamolies like texture-tearing and getting stuck at brush boundaries.

I'm playing on my home gaming pc. This problem is new to me, too, though I have a memory of it happening years ago when I first started playing Thief, but I suspect that was the Gold edition.
I started playing a few different fms and jumping onto ropes and vines -- it seems to have gone away by itself. This engine is haunted with evil spirits. I wonder if it'll be back? :weird:

Death by rope bug.....heh....most of us have.
When I read your title I had to laugh because just last week I was playing a Gold Fm and jumped off a rope onto a hammer that was on the floor.
Took damage. Tried jumping on the hammer again. Nothing. Took the hammer and dropped it by a bed. Got on the bed, jumped on the hammer.
Nothing. Took the hammer back to by the rope, climbed the rope and jumped onto the hammer again. Bonk, bonk on the toes, bonk, bonk. I was dead.

If the rope is against a brush I will be pushed halfway down the rope once I reach the top, and if reloading from a quicksave while on a rope I sometimes find myself not attached to the rope anymore! But I've never been thrown clear off a rope horizontally before. It sounds kinda fun.

It's like Key Holing or Door Jumping, but even less predictable!
If you are always thrown straight back, I suppose you could make sure you have the longest distance of open space behind you.

If you watch the "movie" "In the Name of the King- A Dungeon SiegeTale" you see the rope bug used to very good effect...:joke:
If we are very lucky*, Uwe might just make a Thief movie yet...**
*sarcasm
** I think I'm going to be sick...hard

What "movie" is that? Maybe a Thief Gold intro? I don't even have TG on my hard drive any more. Might be worth reloading to see this trick.
I am always thrown straight back, but also in a high arc! I watch the Thief world whizz by below and I usually die, though sometimes I land softly as a cat. Sometimes looking straight up and jumping onto it "just barely" is enough to keep me from getting trhown off. Not always. Sometimes approaching it from underneath the arrow's body itself will work. Sometimes only getting my sister's prayer group together along with my cousin Herbert's chanting Buddhist tribe works. :weird:
It would be fun if it didn't get so frustrating!
BTW: it's baaaaack. :ebil:

Hmm, this has never happened even a single time. Maybe its software or hardware related somehow? I mean small variations in the T2 install
