My ten year old PC that ran in Windows 98, and on which I spent many hours playing Thief Gold, Thief 2 and numerous Fan Missions, finally died recently. As a result I now have a brand new PC that runs Vista and I’m trying to reinstall all the Thief stuff.
I started with Thief 2. Initially I simply reinstalled it from the original CDs. It then ran but crashed at the first spot of combat. So I looked at the FAQ (should have done that first), deleted that installation and started again.
This time I installed it via the “e:\setup.exe –lgntforce” route. I also amended the shortcut to use “C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C start /affinity 1 thief2.exe” because of dual processors.
The game worked OK and did not crash at the first combat. I let the guards kill me but when I died I didn’t get the usual death skull screen and music – it just went straight back to the menu.
Should I have got the death skull screen (I know you do when playing fan missions and I thought you did on the original but it’s so long since I played the original that I can’t remember)? If so, can anyone please tell me what I’ve done wrong. Thanks.

Do the other movies play? Yes, you should've seen the mission failed screen.

Come to think of it there was no movie at the start - it just went straight into the menu so there was no briefing.
I see that's also covered in the FAQ.
Thanks

To get videos working in Vista, install the Indeo codec linked in the FAQ, run the lgvid fix every time you start up (a ddfix.ini setting can do this for you if you have ddfix installed) and "Run as Administrator" (can be set in compatability tab)
Works everytime for me :D

Don't run any other .avi,.mpg. or .mp3 files before you start the game. It will work. I have the same problem. Just run Thief first, after you launch your PC.
