I vaguely recall Dark Messiah of Might and Magic doing the same thing, but I'm not that sure.
Dark Messiah's demo was in the game, just surprisingly late in it.

Yes, play Half-Life Uplink, it's fun.

Fallout, although the same area, had a completely different set of missions and main goal in Junktown. From memory you had to make two gangs fight each other or something like that.

The demo for Serious Sam was quite a bit different from the final game. A couple of really interesting areas were removed.

Terra Nova's demo mission was epic!

Another glass for HL Uplink. There's a mod that adds it to the main game (you get there by using one of the portals in the Lambda reactor, and another teleporter is placed at the very end that puts you back in the main game where the first teleporter originally places you) but last time I played there was a bug that rendered the elevator between the first and 2nd maps to be completely broken and you couldn't proceed to the next map. In my first playthrough with the Uplink mod (back in 2006) it didn't happen, but in my 2nd playthrough earlier this year it did, which I thought was odd. I got past it by writing down how much ammo per weapon I had, cheating myself into the other map, then spawning enough ammo to match the previous amounts as closely as possible.
I dunno what happened there.
Also, hi! I've been without power for 4 days 'cuz hurricane-force winds knocked out the lines and Duke Energy's horrible mismanagement failed to get everything back online in a reasonable time! :D

Mirrors Edge joins this club with another spin on exclusive content in a demo: if if you preorder the game you can unlock a TimeTrial Mode in the demo.
not really a new level but still a new spin on the whole Demo/Exclusivity thing.

Me too. Columbus was HAMMERED by the storm. Sustained 75 MPH winds from Hurricane Ike. W/out power from Sunday @ 5pm until Wednesday @ 9am. LUCKILY when the power was restored, the cable/internet/phone (it's all through the same line) were on as well. We stayed at my fiance's parents' house Tues/Tues. night. They were only out for 20 hours and they got their internet and TV back then, too.

Demos should be for evaluating the game in order to make a purchasing decision. If a demo requires you to
purchase the game in order to access some of its content, it's not really a demo. Not that part of it, at any rate. IMHO.
