I posted the others because they show some in-game action, which the 'nice' ones do not. ;)

I wish I could reproduce the D1 bugs on my machines (I have three at my disposal: WinXP pro, WinXP home, and Linux), but they never ever occurred on any of them.
FWIW my machine runs Win98SE on an 800MHz Athlon, with a GF4Ti4200. If it's a Win9x thing and you had access to CDs for those OSs, you could try installing them under virtual machines. Free VM software like (
http://bochs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/topper.pl?name=New+Bochs+Documentation&url=http://bochs.sourceforge.net/doc/docbook/user/index.html) Bochs, (
http://fabrice.bellard.free.fr/qemu/ossupport.html) QEMU, or (
http://www.vmware.com/products/player/) VMWare Player might just do the trick. That's likely to be a fair bit of effort, but I mention it just in case you're keen and it's helpful...
The geometry on display in those two screens is just fabulous, given the nature of the Descent 1/2 engine. Most impressive!
edit: Thank you for all your work on the project, btw! It's always a real joy to see classic older games looking so good and playing so well on modern PCs. The efforts of all involved are greatly appreciated :)

Hey, thanks! :)
sluggs,
take another look at these two images you find so garish. ;)

<table width="80%"><tr><td>(
http://www.brockart.de/descent/images/d2x-xl-6.jpg) <img src=http://www.brockart.de/descent/images/d2x-xl-6s.jpg border=2></td><td>This picture shows a generator. Actually, the yellow lights are moving, dipping the entire room into an eerie mix of light and shadow. In-game, this looks pretty cool, imo.</td></tr></table>
<table width="80%"><tr><td>(
http://www.brockart.de/descent/images/d2x-xl-8.jpg) <img src=http://www.brockart.de/descent/images/d2x-xl-8s.jpg border=2></td><td>This picture is from inside a reactor room. The red and black textures move and work as force fields you cannot penetrate, and the panels at the walls are animated. The whole thing looks like a reactor control room with a lot of electronics. I find it pretty well done, too. You need to see it in-game.</td></tr></table>

Both images are from the first level of my single player mission Warp Shockwave, which you can find on (
http://www.descent2.de) my Descent site (check the side menu for the site's various areas).

I'd like to check them out and give you some feedback but i don't own the full game so i wouldn't be able to play them. I just tried downloading the demo from descent2.com but the download page for the file couldn't be found!
Oh, those last 3 big images need resizing to 640x480 BTW, it's the rules of the forums. You're new so i'll excuse you, this time! :cheeky:

Well goodness, surely you're capable of using a search engine to find an alternative source? (if not, (
http://www.3dgamers.com/) will undoubtedly sort you out.)

just look at the level spotlight on my D2 site.
One comment on this... with many of the spotlight entries it's difficult to tell whether the level is intended for single-player or multiplayer (or both). Sometimes you say so in the comments, sometimes you don't mention it at all. It would be great if there was some indicator of this displayed with each entry (particularly for those of us who are only interested in single-player levels).
That said, I look forward to checking out some of those levels! (although I'm reminded here that I still have to play through the Vertigo pack at some stage...)

Shadowcat,
I had frequently thought of this myself ... but the entire project is already devouring me ...
Just changing it. Btw, if you want to try excellent, rarely played, gorgeous multiplayer levels, try those from Kruel and Darkhorse. I consider these two guys the most outstanding D2 level designers in terms of texturing and level structure. If I may recommend a few of my own multiplayer levels: TombZ of DeZtruKtion, Pyromaniac and Unreal-D2 play very well. Circus Maximus is a pretty new level of mine that has never been tried with more than two players, but which I expect to play very well, too. Speed is a level using many D2X-XL enhancements (speed boosts, teleports, shield rechargers, cameras) in a way particularly meant to enhance the multiplayer gaming experience.

Why do all the models look like they're being rendered fullbright?
