Bad grammar?
Either that, or
Star Raiders.

Hmm! I'd have said
Resistance: Fall of Man, but I'm pretty sure the furore was over an English cathedral.

Mirror's Edge?
Yep. Granted lots of games have you running, but in Mirror's Edge it's the very essence.
Which brings me to...

Collecting oddball crap all over the countryside, turning a national tragedy into more of a giftshop for crooks and thugs.

Fallout?
That does fit, but not what I was thinking. Granted lots of game have you collecting oddball crap & involve national tragedies, but like the last one, in the game I'm thinking of it's the very essence of what you're even doing there, which isn't exactly what Fallout is. Fallout and the game I'm thinking about do share a pretty major plot point though.

Create terrible working conditions for your employees by forcing them all to sleep in the same room, providing them with a bland diet, and abusing them on a whim.

Will do all my mine as if told from a first person perspective:
Game 5: I fly through the air onwards towards the horizon. A small beat goes through the head phones in my ears. Suddenly some enemy ships appear. Bam bam bam, they go down. The tune going through my ears ramps up in intensity, but still I race toward the horizon. Always toward the horizon I fly.
Does "as if first person" mean it's not first person?
If it's from the PC's perspective,
Space Harrier, if not
Xevious.

Here's one that's not from my favorites, but is funny.
Darth Vader is a queen in this one. Really.
