... No we wouldn't.

Nope indeed. Just nope. Because that isn't the problem.

Okay, maybe I would. My image of Obama's politics have changed a lot lately and the fact that he's now apparently engaging the US in Syria, right after the Prism thing, makes it look like he's trying to direct attention to foreign politics.

except ccc's post on this page brought up a very valid point. This is exactly the sort of thing which has happened in other countries - the government starts watching people, activists start becoming labeled as terrorists, and before you know it, the government has citizens ratting each other out for being 'enemies of the state' for trying to disturb the status quo in any way. These 'enemies' are locked up and tortured in prison. Your whole family gets arrested because of your actions. You can't trust anyone anymore.
This has happened in lots of middle eastern countries, in Russia, etc. You think it can't happen in America when we're doing the exact same things that lead down that road?

Something ridiculous like >80% of all use of anti-terror legislation in the UK has been to quell or divert peaceful protest.

You know CCC, if you weren't so condescending (people are stupid, wake up!, I'm in the know!) then people might actually listen to some of the things you say.
That's mostly intended for the people who behave in an even more egotistical manner.

But anyway, on the topic of destroying all life.....Does anyone have suggestions as to how we start?

With everything we're doing to the planet, I think we're on the right track. Also, here's a list of ways to destroy the planet:
(
http://www.livescience.com/17875-destroy-earth-doomsday.html)
Some are pretty interesting:
Method: Hijack control of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island, N.Y. Use the RHIC to create and maintain a stable strangelet. Keep it stable for as long as it takes to absorb the entire Earth into a mass of strange quarks. Keeping the strangelet stable is incredibly difficult once it has absorbed the stabilizing machinery, but creative solutions may be possible.
A while back, there was some media hoo-hah about the possibility of this actually happening at the RHIC, but in actuality the chances of a stable strangelet forming are pretty much zero. Earth's final resting place: a huge glob of strange matter.
...
You will need: a light bulb
Method: This is a fun one. Contemporary scientific theories tell us that what we may see as vacuum is only vacuum on average, and actually thriving with vast amounts of particles and antiparticles constantly appearing and then annihilating each other. It also suggests that the volume of space enclosed by a light bulb contains enough vacuum energy to boil every ocean in the world. Therefore, vacuum energy could prove to be the most abundant energy source of any kind. Which is where you come in. All you need to do is figure out how to extract this energy and harness it in some kind of power plant — this can easily be done without arousing too much suspicion — then surreptitiously allow the reaction to run out of control. The resulting release of energy would easily be enough to annihilate all of planet Earth and probably the sun too.
