I've browsed the forums and have run a few searches and didn't see this come up, though I'm sure I'm not the first to do it. It's a way of dealing with the big children (robots with cannons) without using weapons or items.
This is a cheap and effective tactic which may be viewed as an exploit, so I'll label it a spoiler. I really just see it as something the mechanist engineers overlooked.
I found that the best way to destroy a big child is to block its cannon at close range - the projectile explodes in the child's face and will disable the child after 2 or 3 occurances. The easiest way is to use a corner of a wall. If you make a RIGHT turn while a child is following you, you can get the child to get "stuck" on the corner, keeping its cannon against the wall. Then you can taunt the child, making it fire the cannon right into the wall and have it destroy itself. Sometimes the child will back up, so I would just back up as well, lure the child back into the wall and move forward to get it to fire again.
I wish I had a screenshot of this action, since I'm having a hard time describing it. It's really very simple.
I've only done it with one child chasing me. I imagine if two were after you, this may not be possible.
[edit] I was able to disable 4 children in Soulforge by doing this, so I don't think it was an isolated incident with just one unlucky robot.

Been done and discussed many times. Try a search for BOTS or Warbots, or robots.
The other way is to hide behind a pillar and let them blast the side you are not on. :)

Excellent. So is considered a legitimate tactic or more of a game exploit? I don't really feel guilty after doing it.

That site is great. Very informative and pretty funny.
Just reading Shipping... and Receiving and I'm loving the picture of all the AI characters laid out for a screenshot.
