Definitely. UT kicks Q3's butt.

Grim Fandango down at #8?
No Thief?
Wankers.

It seemed they took all the good games of recent times(ie last year) and added them in higher positions than true classics. Elite+ so far down? No Broken Sword?
Brem_X_Jones on 9/8/2001 at 16:04
Thief was at 11.

It amazes me that, although yes it IS a good game, so many people insist that Half-Life is the best game ever made. That's just such a narrow view of the gaming world to have - there's so much more out there to experience. I'm sure even Gabe Newell wouldn't suggest it if put to the question. There's more than a handful of games out there from even just the past few years that offer more in the way of innovation, gameplay, immersion, interaction, physics, graphics, you name it. Hey whatever, they have to appeal to reading masses I suppose, to keep their hits and sales high... of course, one only has to look to pop music charts to see similar misrepresentation of what is lauded to be the "best" in an artistic medium.
*sigh*
Oh, and let me add, how Deus Ex could EVER take second seat to Half-Life is absolutely beyond me. In what world is that?

Correction, Thief II was at 11. Thief should have its own entry, if the lacklustre Quake and its deathmatch counterpart.
Kieron, please tell us that you at least campaigned for Deus Ex at the top spot.

Oh yes. In fact, I campaigned for most of the top four to be number one. Everyone came to the table wanting to get rid of HL at the top - but we couldn't really find a reason to depose it.
I'm not going to bother arguing Quake 3's position, since it wasn't my choice - suffice to say, it's simply the hardest, purest comeptitive multiplayer hit in existence. And the one we most play. Quake 1 offers an entirely separate experience, justifying its position. As does Shock and Shock 2. Thief 1 and Thief 2 don't, making it hard to justify.
HL's mods had no influence.

Fair enough.
Reasons to depose Half-Life:
1. Zero replayability.
2. Poor ending.
3. Has dated badly in the face of Elite Force, Project: IGI and Serious Sam.
4. Deus Ex is a far superior game. IMO.
5. It had the potential to be the best ever. It didn't use it. Some of the aspects of retro Fps remained. In my opinion, too many.

Grrrr... I hate these stupid "top 10" or whatever lists. They always represent biased opinions, and PCGamer is no exception.
You see, for lists like these to exist, you have to have some sort of anchor; something to rate all the other games by. For example: "Top 10 Most Influencial Games of All Time" would be a good start - or "Top Selling Games of All Time", because these are subjects which, for the most part, are easily classified. But simply "Best Games" doesn't cut it; it easily translates into "duh, what was I playing yestaurday?"
Brem_X_Jones on 12/8/2001 at 15:48
All opinions are biased. That's why they're opinions.
The only question was "What do we like best"? We answered it.
