Thief should have been Number 1. I think some of these lists are like the Oscars in Hollywood. The people don't really play the games. I don't think any of the Quake series should be on the list. It was just an upgrade of Wolfenstein.
Deus Ex is really likeable too. Haven't played SS2 yet. What's it like? :confused:

I don't think your on to a winner with that one. People who "play games for a living" haven't 'really' played Deus Ex, Thief, Quake and the rest...

Let's just say that list is garbage. It truly is. Nothing it says has any validity, and we'll leave it at that. As for all of the people who put down half-life but then question why Max Payne isn't up there... I think both of those games are in the same ball park anyway..so what's yer points? Both are mindless frag fest. Gimme Half Life over Payne any day. Heh, I read a best games of all times list rescently that said tony hawk 2 was the second greatest game in existence.

Oh, and viva la system shock!!!! Deus Ex and the Shock series happen to be some of my all time favorites (where exactly is alpha centauri on that list!?). I just feel that their list wasn't very well though out, and it shows. Since I'm editing... I completely agree with the post below this one.

I played and finished Max Payne, and it's definitely a brilliantly detailed adrenaline-fueled action fest from start to finish, blah blah. However that's _all_ it was. I'm still playing and enjoying the original Deus Ex, as well as some of the new mods well after I put away Payne. Action and graphics are cool, but story and immersion rules.

I can see the reasoning behind Quake 3: PC Gamer UK has been Quake-addicts since the release of the Quake Test. I think they actually had Quake Test (yes, the TEST version) as No.2 game of all time a few years ago!
While I tend to not question PC Gamer's judgement, I do find it extremely offensive that Championship Manager made it at all! It's success as a mainstream game (best selling game in the football[soccer] mad UK) does not reflect it's quality as a gaming experience.
In my opinion, a game like Thief offers a much better experience than Baldurs Gate. I always found the Bioware games to be too stat bound and constricting, forcing you to go down certain paths because of a few random dice rolls at the beginning of the game. With a Bioware game I am always aware of the fact that I'm still playing a computer game, partly because of the viewpoint that distances you so much from your character. Even archiac games like System Shock 1 gives me the "waking up thinking WTF the hud went?" syndrome, a testiment to it's immersiveness.
Which is why I liked Deus Ex so much. Sure, the game is not everyone's cup of tea. Knowing the twitchy nature of the majority of the PC Gamer staff, I could easily understand why Half-Life remained king.
As for Max Payne, I think it just makes it into the top ten. Bullet time is fun, for the first few levels, but it gets repetitive.
