The thing about that is, I had a very short argument with the staff of PDX over the release date, because, quite frankly, it's not official. I can't STAND it when journalists, both online and print, don't do their research and/or don't carefully choose their words. When you take on the task of being a reporter, you have a moral obligation to make the best effort you can not to misinform the public -- who trust in you to give them correct information.
Gamespy has been ultimately one of the worst culprits of this. I can't count how many articles I've read on their hub sites that have contained some pretty flat out WRONG information.
When I heard about this article, I first checked it out. Then I e-mailed contacts at Ion Storm to see if they would comment on whether or not this was indeed official. I was told by two people that the release date had indeed not been officially announced. Not only that, but an interview which had been published the same exact day posed the question of the projected release date to Warren Spector and even he would not give out any information regarding it I believe a more or less direct quote was, "We really aren't ready to discuss that yet".
I urge anyone and everyone who cares about not being misinformed to join in the fight against bad journalism practices. Before the word "official" is tagged onto anything, it should automatically click in someone's head that if the information isn't contained within a press release and/or that a press release hasn't been sent out yet, it should be considered suspect.
I briefly commented on the irresponsibility of the news reporters (and staff, since my comments did draw the attention of the site manager, Despot, who didn't seem to give a rat's patooie, since there was no correction or retraction posted) but received absolutely little response to what I had to say. To anyone who may be interested, the discussion starts here and continues on for a page or two.

Gamespy are second only to gamespot in shit talking. Release date stuff pisses me off - they'll tell us and some exclusives that are officially confirmed are okay, but saying "an official date is _____" when its just your guess, like all sales sites and many fan sites is a bag of ass. Even I can do that, but I'm not such a fool. Suprisingly.

We may as well get used to putting up with poor reports. As time goes on and press releases become more and frequent, an additional deluge of overzealous and immoral journalists is BOUND to flood the populace with half baked information. At this point, unless it comes directly from Ion Storm's website or through here, I'm not entirely willing to believe anything I read.

I've used Gamespot as my primary gaming site ever since Gamecenter was shut down, and i've been increasingly dissatisfied with it lately. If no one minds me going a little off-topic, is there a better alternative to Gamespot? I'm only really interested in PC games, and i've had it in for Gamespot ever since they started forcing people to use their "high-speed FTP download service". :grr:

Sadly, none that I can think of. I used to frequent Gamecenter, but that was closed in favor of Gamespot (ergh).
There are however a number of nice sites for PC gaming news, including BluesNews.com and VoodooExtreme.com. These are two very exceptional sites that give a general and sometimes specific overview of the gaming industry. Very nice :)
