In all likelyhood, Deus Ex 2 will use whatever incarnation of Unreal is around at the time. The new tech is absolutly astounding (terrian, character model detail and movement). Mostly though, because it's what they already know. Using Unreal would cut down on a lot of development time and expenses.
As an added bonus, considering the bane of Deus Ex 1 was D3D, Glide is no more, and Epic is working with nVida to include Hardware T&L (good for Radeon too) and other features.

I dont know. From what i've seen on Unreal 2 it looks great. But as i play through NOLF i'm loving this engine more and more. I really like the ability to drive vehicles, and the diverse locations is awsome.
Though i agree, Unreal 2 is the obvious choice for easy coding.

I'd like to see Deus Ex 2 (and Thief 3) using the MAX-FX engine. But that ain't gonna happen.

The Serious Sam engine would be terrible for Deus Ex. Serious Sam is all about killing people hundreds of times and not adding any skill level it at all -- except killing as many people as you can.

frozenman did you ever play Unreal? lol
Look at what ISA did to the Unreal engine. If they can do that to Unreal, then they can certaintly do it to other engines. Although the most likely is Unreal 2, i dont think that Q3 will even get a look in. Its not a great engine at all (ohh curved surfaces, yippee!)
Mmm that Max engine. Now that would be interesting, i had completely forgot about it (probably due to the game being delayed ever month hehe) but it does look sweet.

I just finished Deus Ex again a few minutes ago and I choose the Helios ending again. It simply is my favourite. Please do not kill this pretty illusion of an "Benevolent Dictator"!!!
But let´s be serious: I Think Darkstalker is absolute right, when he says that the sequel to DE should be a PREQUEL!Imagine:You play as Paul Denton, you are the first nano augmented agent and first you are absolutely loyal to Unatco and fight many missions for them (more then JC did). Then you get to know JIL and learn about the dark side of the coalition, you come to Hong Kong with the mission to kill Tracer Tong. Perhaps you even get to know Daedalus....
I think there is much room for splendid ideas!

I really dont think a prequal would work too well with a game like Deus Ex. Reason? Well the story was so engaging you never knew what would happen next, but with a prequal you already know the ending. Know what i mean?
Its really fun to think up cool new features to be put in the game, but these serve no purpose if they dont fit into the game.
The hardest part of thinking about Deus Ex 2 is the story. Should it be prequal? Should it be a sequal? if so which ending? If its just Deus Ex 2 but set in a different time, how do u explain the first game? Lots of questions.

I don't really think it needs to be directly connected to the original story at all. I think the first game told a complete story, and to add on to it would be arbitrary and contrived.
Instead I'd prefer a game with the same qualities, but with a completely different story. It'd still be a dark, cyberpunk consiracy story, but not about JC and the gang. I could think of any number of great stories that could take place in a similar world as Deus Ex. I don't see why it needs to be restricted to terrorists and political stuff.

Shogo: Mobile Armor Division
It used the Lithtech 1.0 engine and simply kicked arse. I still play through it every once in awhile, and it has a nice anime touch to it. You can't get it at any stores, but you can still order it online at

I got Shogo not a month ago at a store in the UK. It's an ace game, and it handles the changes in scale between human and MCA very well indeed.
I think the Red Faction engine would be great for the DX ethos, but possibly modifying the amount of effort it takes to simply blast through something, and reducing the amount of demolitions equipmewnt the player can carry, meaning that just blasting through a wall isn't an easy way out.
The Unreal 2 engine would also be nice, though it looks a little beyond my PC's capabilities.
As for plot, I think living a few decades (centuries?) down the Helios line would be great, with a world controlled by a shadowy yet benevolent dictator, the nature of humanity ensures that there'd be sufficient discontent, even in this 'perfect world' to provide a suitably twisty plot.
