I have been looking into getting a new computer for quite some time now. With original computer a pentium 2 233Mhz with 32MB of ram I had to run Deus Ex in window mode and it was as slow as you would not believe. Right now i'm looking to get an AMD athlon XP with 256MB of ram. I would want to run deus ex at optium speed but I realize that Deus Ex has some problems with Direct 3D and I am not sure if they were corrected with the 1112fm patch or not. I was originally going to buy a Geforce 3 video card. Should I buy a cheap voodoo instead but will that compromise the performance of other games, including the new ones? Also does anyone know if Deus Ex works properly under windows XP? Please give your input!

As far as I know DX works fine under WinXP. Now, the patch does alleviate somewhat the D3D problems but not entirely, so I imagine your performance will be somewhat variable with a Geforce3. HOWEVER, don't get a Voodoo. I'm a big fan of Voodoo but they're dead, no one will make Glide optomized games anymore, OpenGL and (sadly) D3D are the future. Therefore, IMO, Voodoo is NOT the way to go. You'll simply have to suck it up for DX though. Given your processor speed and the punch behind a Geforce3 though I imagine DX performance will be acceptable. Just not stellar.

I'd agree with Agent Monkeysee for the most part. I like my Voodoo 3, but I couldn't honestly recommend using one if it's the only one you have. And really, Deus Ex works acceptably in D3D after the patch.
As for WinXP, I personally dislike using a MS OS that's less than six months old - Win2k seems fairly mature now. Plus there are one or two things about XP I reallydon't like, but that may be just me, so don't weigh that too heavily.
One known issue with XP and Deus Ex is that you'll need updated drivers if you use an Audigy soundcard, or you're in trouble.

I was thinking of getting an audigy soundcard with my computer. Do you mean that if I have an audigy soundcard, Win XP, and Deus Ex I will have to update my audigy drivers?

That's what I meant - it's a good principle anyways. The drivers on the CDs that ship with hardware are often so old, you might as well use the discs for coasters. (not if there is other software on the CD, of course.) Try the Soundblaster downloads page.
