Deus Ex crashes to desktop on startup... - by Orkin Man

I just got Deus Ex (I finally decided to try it out), but I can't get it to work. The install went fine (after I removed my Gravis software), but now when I try to start the game, as soon as it switches the video mode, it dumps me back to the desktop with no error message. It works in safe mode, but it's unplayably slow like that.
I have the patch and the latest video drivers for my card (Geforce 256 SDR).
Thanks for any help you can give!

What operating system are you running? If Win2000, be sure you have SP2 installed.
Also make sure your copy of DirectX is 8.0a, *not* plain 8.0 (8.1 is out, you can always try it...)
See if any of this helps. Normally the patch and the latest drivers solves that problem.
Oh, if you have the GOTY edition, don't patch it - it's already patched and attempts to patch it can cause Problems.

I have the same problem (I get an error message though), with windows 98, but not with windows XP. I have no idea what's causing this, have latest of pretty much everything. If I'm lucky, it let's me play with Direct3d under win98, but mostly I have to settle with OpenGL. Or had to...thanks to WinXP. First time I'm happy with a MS software product. <img src="smile.gif" border="0">
