Deus Ex - I don't get it? Is it because... - by WuCong

Well, Deus Ex runs just fine on my machine: P2-350, 160MB, GeForce2MX. Sure, the vid card is good, but even with my slow ass processor I get decent speed. I can't run it really high res, but I can do 800x600 with all textures high and have good framerates.

Upgrade the processer/mobo first. On a budget, look into a Celeron 2 or an AMD Duran (my reccomendation). Get the fastest speed you can afford.

Ok, this might be a little off topic, but as long as people are talking about 3d cards, is a TNT2 card good, or is it considered obsolete? I want the best Deus ex experience possible.

Repeat after me.
"Deus Ex is not Thief"
Remind yourself of this, the same rules for hiding do not apply, this is a game based on a deathmatch engine, not a custom designed sneaking engine.
You have to learn to cope with the way DX's AI does things, and adjust your tactics accordingly.
Darkness is no longer your only friend. but if in doubt remember that JC can fight back rather more effectively than Garett.
As for the TNT2, it's okay, for old technology, but it is 2 generations removed from cutting edge, so don't expect wonders.

Go Play the Serious Sam test 2. Then play DX. You'll be happy.

I don't know why we are bashing other peoples' system configurations. Just because you got a new computer more recently than they did doesn't mean you're better or that they are worse..
On the technology topic, WuCong's computer is fine. I'm not sure why you are trying to discourage him from buying the game and enjoying it. Just because you cannot run it at high resolutions doesn't mean that the game is unplayable or not enjoyable. Sheesh.

To add a little more to the AI topic:
I'm not criticizing Thief here. The formula obviously works very well, but if you think about it, Thief has some very unrealistic dark areas to hide in. Not to mention the fact that I think a trained guard would call for help immediately (at least half of the time) and wouldn't fail to see someone in a dark corner. Obviously, if you are looking carefully, and you CARE about your guard job, you are not going to look from wall to wall and ignore the dark corners. Instead, you are going to patrol the room and search every nook and cranny.
Thus, even though the AI in Deus Ex is poor, I feel that it's a little bit more realistic when it comes to gameplay. It makes more sense that the only "safe" way to hide from an enemy is around a corner or behind something. I agree that sometimes the AI's intelligence in pinpointing your location is a bit uncanny, but I think if I had to choose between an AI that looked for me when I hit him with a dart and an AI that sat there and whistled until he passed out, I'd pick the former.

Salut.
Yeah - but Thief is clearly far more unrealistic than people give it credit for. Which is a good thing - btw. I get enough realism in my real life.
The point of Thief is that Garret is uber-ninja stealth fella, innit? He might as well not be there in shadows, given his ultimate quasi-mystic training.
I tend to think of Stealth in Deus Ex in a different way to Thief. Thief is about avoidance.
Deus is about /hunting/.
(A longer rant would involve me talking about the relationship of power in both games, and make me cry as I'm too tired. However, having just got some concept art sent through for Anna from the Cassandra Project has made me smile, so /that/'s all right then)

Get a Voodoo 3 3000.When I tranq an enemy from total darkness they do seem to shoot me;maybe I'm moving around too much.

On the AI topic. I opened up the DX sdk to find the NPC AI set to mammal intelligence as opposed to human as it is in UT. I dont know why though.
