You get the point.

So I played mission 1 on 640x480. Was fine. Learnt to sneak up and then kill which I never do in Thief.
I went via teh otside of the Statue and after I finished went back down to the ground floor, hacked a video camera terminal and was subsequently shot by robot gun. I think.
What happened? (went to bed after that).

Hmm - i believe the only turret on level one is the one on the main entrance?
If you hack the camera, and then later set off the alarm it will shoot you.
Its also a possiblity that you hacked the security grid and ordered it to shoot everything. I think.
Is there even a security grid on Liberty Island?

No, there are three turrets. I accessed the computer but didn't go round the corner enough and didn't deactivate the turret.
Sorted it all out now.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but that's the way it is.
When you shoot someone, they tend to get a bit pissed and see who shot them. Remember...you're a bigass dude walking around in New York City. Complete darkness is a bit hard to come by.
The baton is a stick you beat people with. The crowbar or knife is more effective, but the baton is non-leathal. The electric prod is the same. Your vision screws up because being hit by bullets tends to disrupt one's concentration.
Deus Ex is a great game (IMHO, the best ever made). It's more like System Shock 2 then Thief. Perhaps you should wait until you can get a better machine, but definatly get this game some time in your life.

Hey, if you're satisfied with how the demo plays on your system, the full game will probably be not too much slower. It's a great game, and definitely worth playing even if you have to put up with slow speed.
Some people are just spoiled when it comes to speed; I know many people who wouldn't touch a game if it didn't run at 30fps. But I've got a system much like yours and it runs okay. You just have to be patient at times...
