Think about it:
Jedi Knight has...
A branching storyline
Force powers (for jumping, seeing, running)
A Lightsabre
A villain who is your equal and opposite
Experience point system for upgrading skills
Civilians who can be killed for benefit
An NPC ally who provides transport between levels
Deus Ex has...
A branching Storyline
Aug Powers (for jumping, seeing, running)
A Lightsabre-type sword (Dragons tooth)
A villain who is your equal and opposite
Experience point system for upgrading skills
Civilians who can be killed for benefit
An NPC ally who provides transport between levels
No doubting that DE is the better game, but how much was the former an influence on the latter?

I thought the light-sabre duels were very well done in Jedi Knight considering the limitations of a mouse and keyboard.

I don't remember these two, but the other similiarities are shockingly similar

oh sure you do...
-find secrets and complete objectives to gain experience points to spend on force powers.
-civilians in the towns and workers(don't remember their name though) on for example the Fuel Station level.
but i can't say I find them to be very similar games anyway.
however, Shock, Deus Ex and JK is the top-trio in my hall of fame. I've played them so much it's almost silly...

Do you think that the aug powers are similar to the use of force powers, though?
I'm not saying DE was a rip-off. No way. But, I do think that JK's a seriously overlooked game.
The structure and features were years ahead of its time and re-appeared in other groudbreaking games like DE and SS2 later on.
If Lucas's lawyers didn't stomp on any supposed 'infringement' on the franchise, you'd have a PLANETJEDIKNIGHT.com site and a bulging mod scene. His loss really.

come to think of it, there never was much talk about Jedi Knight among my friends, so i guess it's pretty much overlooked. perhaps it got in the shadow of being released around the time of Quake2. just like System Shock got in the shadow of Doom. Strange that... how iD always have got all the attention, even with Wolf3d.
when you list all those similarities they seem obvious, but i wouldn't have thought of them otherwise, because despite everything they feel completely different to me. They are no less superb though, in their own right.

Hey, that's pretty right. And then there's the semi-philosophical issues in each game.

DX borrows shamelessly from many many games, like SS2, JK, Metal Gear Solid, Thief, and probably lots of others, but is by no means a rip-off game.

Umm, sure there is. It may be "better" for being newer, but they were both truly excellent games in their heyday. Frankly I don't see myself playing Deus Ex in four or five years as much as I still play JK (a '96 game if I'm not mistaken) today, either.
