I really enjoyed the original Deus Ex, but I found myself really disappointed with DX : IW....
I just felt that DX was a great game, as it had it all. People are complaining that the Weapon Mods suck on the Original, or that it didn't have good graphics or whatever, but it was a much more intelligent game, although it had a serious problem, namely the Aliens.... a mistake....

Invisible War, if compared to Deus Ex 1, seems more an expansion pack with an upgraded engine and graphics, than a sequel. You know, one of those expansions that add 15 hours of gaming to a 60-hours original product.

DX:IW is the opposite of an expansion pack. It's more like a reduction pack.

Affirmative.

Definitly the first Deus Ex first. If you play IW first you will spoil it and probably won't enjoy the first one as much (the graphics are more primitive and some story spoilers). If you do play the first one don't get turned off by the first level, it's really bad (I didn't touch the game for like a month after the first level) but it gets MUCH better afterwards.

What are you saying? The first level in DX1 is an example of how levels should be designed: Complete freedom! You have only one thing you HAVE to do, and that's get to the top of the statue, but there are a lot of other things to occupy yourself with, and there are several alternative solutions to the problems.

I don't actually know as though there is anyone out there who played DX1 then later went on to play IW and like IW more.
Than count me.
I think that the original DX is a brilliant game with the outstanding plot and concept, but Invisible War has a far more balanced and outstanding role-playing system, phantastic design and very good style. To me, IW is a little better in general, than the first game.

I'm half way through IW (as everyone said it was awful I've waited until it's nice and cheap before I buy it) and the story is good and develops on the idea of different factions. As plot is the reason I buy these games I'm happy...
HOWEVER I've had to create a mental block of DX1 so that everytime I do something I don't feel like a small child with all the one click simplified solutions and dumbed down ways of doing everything. Oh and please reassure me that everyone else is annoyed by the fact that you can't plan you ammo tactically as it's ALL THE SAME so you just run out...
Also realising how much I miss the lean command and instead just run backwards and forwards around corners being shot by SSC guys.. grr.
Sorry but I don't understand how you can say it has a better roleplaying system as all you have to play with is a few Biomods (all of which seem pretty useless so far). Maybe i'm getting you wrong however and you ment more interactive RPing storywise.

A bit old, but Deus Ex didn't have any aliens.
Aegeri on 19/10/2004 at 12:33
Deus Ex doesn't have aliens indeed, just genetically engineered psychic monkeys.
Anyway, there isn't any question here really, the original game is infinitely better than the sequel, which ripped the heart and soul of the first game out while spitting on it as it sold out to console mediocrity.
So get the first one, but only get the second if you are especially bored or REALLY want to have both games.
