Hi Everyone,
Well, I've been trying to get into Deus Ex, and have enjoyed what I have played so far...but I do have a problem that is affecting my enjoyment. I apologize if this has been answered anywhere, I looked but didn't find the answer.
Every once in a while...usually,but not always after accessing a game menu. The game frame rate starts to chug, and the game become unplayable. It isn't area specific, certain areas work perfectly one time, but not the next. The only thing that fixes this is to exit the game and reload a saved game. If I save it while it's slowed down, and reload that save..everything is fine.
I have the patch installed as well.
My machine is capable of playing the game... Athlon Tbird 1.2 GHz, the video card is a Gforce 2 MX. Like I said, when it's working I have no frame rate stutters or anything.
I have tried turning off the advanced sound options, and lowered the resolution to 600 x 480, but still no luck. Usually I can find solutions to problems like this but haven't had any luck so far. I am just hoping someone else out there has had something similiar and might have an idea for a solution.
Thanks everyone,
-Dale Paton
--I should note that I have all drivers, but I haven't tried OpenGL mode....I will try that tonight and report back.

These sort of problems which can't be reproduced arbitrarily are the worst to troubleshoot.
Does this occur with other games/Unreal games? Do you have any disturbing background tasks running?

I had this problem with my computer as well, but it was not DX-, not even game specific. The computer just had the nasty habit to start scratching around on the HDD two hours after having been turned on. He went like mad, but stopped after 5-10 minutes time. This phenomenon, however, was gone, after I had reinstalled Windows.
If you're experiencing those problems not just in DX, but regularily and in no connection to the application active at that moment, and you can spare the time and sweat, try reinstalling.

Just to answer some of the questions.
Deus Ex is the only game I seem to have this issue with, and there is no harddrive thrashing at the time. I have just done a reinstall of Windows (about a month ago), and lastly, I don't have anything running in the background.
However, the good news is...OpenGL seemed to fix the problem!!
Of course, I had to deal with the fact that after switching to
OpenGL EVERY single person model in the game was wearing pink sunglasses. (I know that sounds really really weird..but I wasn't hallucinating.) Anyways, I got rid of the pink sunglasses by reducing one of the detail levels.
So, I am off and running..thanks everyone for the help.
