I am a GENUINE SS2 and ESPECIALLY SS1 fan. I was playing SS1 for <<8>> hours yesterday, completely lost track of time. Whoa, i though.
I then began to think about SS2. How much it wasn't near as good as SS1. Then I got to a party a few SS2 and Deus Ex junkies/fans were there. They were some cool people so we became friends0I got my copy of Deus Ex free.
It was a phenominal game, so NON-LINEAR! Then I realize that I like this almost as much as I love SS1!!!!
If SS2 was as large and as unique and as non-linear as Deus-Ex (ie, blowing up doors-that really stuck with me), it'd be the grandest game ever. My gripes with Deus Ex, not enought eci-fi stuff and no SHODAN. I KNOW THEY HAD NOTHING TO DO WTH DEUS-EX, but I am an SS1 fan here. I think about SS1 even when at school and draw mutants and hybrids on anyhting I can.
Anyone out there Remember the POLITICS OF DANCING? 1984? Re-Flex?
Anyone besides me remember that song?

Having played both SS2 & Deus Ex I prefer SS2 more. I think it has a much more compelling story and for the most part better level design. I also despise the A.I. in Deus Ex. It's horrible. I've seen Q2 baddies act smarter. The amount of air ducts in Deus Ex also gets on my nerves. You thing high security buildings would have some defenses in their air ducts. If this is starting to sound like a DX bashing it isn't I'm just stating my thoughts on why SS2 is better IMO. :D

SS2 beats Deus Ex in the atmosphere category, but not in terms of gameplay. The problems I had with SS2 were with design decisions that negatively impact the amount of fun you have while playing. I'm talking about the weapon degradation, minimum skill limits, ammo and hypo scarcity, enemy respawns etc. If these annoyances were fixed, SS2 would be much more enjoyable. In Deus Ex you are able to have more fun because you aren't worrying as much about running out of ammo or having your weapon jam every ten minutes. I mean, whose bright idea was it to make you pay nanites for everything? You mean they make you pay cash money to get healed and regenerated on a military ship? Some of these inconsistencies are ridiculous!

IMO, comparing Deus Ex to SS2 is like comparing a action/conspiricy movie to a horror movie.
They strive for diffrent things, so it's pointless to compare them.

Yes, the atmosphere is different. But the gameplay mechanics are very similar.

DX borowed quite a lot from SS2. It also improved on many points. As great as Deus Ex is (IMO, the single best game ever made), it can't compare to the atmosphere of SS2, or even Thief: TDP. Knowing who's behind DX2 and T3 makes me drool in anticipation.

Yeah, but System Shock 2 came from a desire to make a different game using the Thief Dark Engine. Personally, I love System Shock 2 and I'm all for it. But I would have loved to see a completely original new game that used the dark engine, rather than a sequel to System Shock. I think that may have served ss2 better as well, because in places the Dark Engine just doesnt seem suited to it.

Hmmm... You know developers often say how "gameplay" is the king. I personally disagree with that. I think immersion and atmosphere is the king. Game can have the best gampley ever, but if the game world itself isn't interesting, I really don't feel bothered to play it. In a way, the weapon degration and other perhaps silly design deciaons of SS2 helped to raise the tension for me, while in some other game - like Deus Ex - they would just been an annoyance.
ps. Yes, I like SS2 much better that Deus Ex, altough it too is a good game.

8 hours... i suppose you beat the game in one strike then? :)
ofcourse there's no SHODAN in Deus Ex(although the word os mentioned in a datacube. not with the same meaning though). And as special as SHODAN is, i obey Helios. I absolutely threw myself at him, merging, first opportunity i got, hehehe. initially i thought he was a cheap rip-off but he grew on me... yes. the 2nd and third time i played he was up there with the best of AI's. the locked up prototype Morpheus AI is pretty damn scary! wonder if he'll have a role in DX2... :)
i also thought DX was a bit too little sci-fi at times, when it was more like a worn-down today. hopefully the sequel will have some real blooming hitech cities.

So you wished SS2 were a mindless shooter. No degredation means you can shoot as long as you want, no minimum skill means you can shoot any weapon you want, more hypos and ammo would make you a god who never gets hurt and shoots a whole bunch of shit.
And i don't know about you, but i liked being scared. I enjoyed the enemy respawn.
