Hello,
I've been playing Deus Ex for a while on my old machine, and I just got a new one today and installed and tried to load it, and I got this weird message :
Critical Error
Can't find file for package 'Engine'
History: UObject:SafeLoadError <- UObject::StaticLoadError <- Init Engine
Yes, I know it says Safe Load in there but I'm not loading it in safe mode ( and when I try to do that, the splash screen doesn't even come up, no loading at all )
The stats of my new machine are:
Athlon 1.33 ghz
VisionTek GeForce 3
256 megs of cas-2 PC 133 RAM
15gb Maxtor Hard Drive
Anyone know an answer to this problem or know of a problem with any of these components?

Should be incomplete installation, try reinstall. Check also DeusEx.log in DX system folder to see which files can't be loaded or initiated, sometimes copy these files from CD to the proper folder can do the job. Pay attention to engine.u, engine.dll and engine.int.

I don't see any critical errors in the log, but I'm uninstalling and reinstalling now.
Wouldn't it tell me if there was an error during the install proccess though?

Nope, not necessarily. AFAIK the installer's error checking leaves something to be desired. One method that has proven reliable is to copy the contents of the CD to a folder on your HD and install from there.

Hmm, strange that it never happened on my older computer.
Oh well, after I reinstalled it worked, apparently it didn't copy some 100 megs of files, the folder was only 619 MB when the install said it should be over 722 MB. Thanks for the help HKPrince, I can now finally run Deus Ex at a decent frame rate =)

Noramlly there is no critical error in the DeusEx.log. It only tells some files can't be initiated or found and then all files unload, then those files should cause the problem.

I decided to go and re-install DeusEx the other day, and I got that same error, I can't even install the game...I've tried using both of my CD drives as well as copying the CD to my HD and installing from there, but I still cannot even install the game....any suggestions?

Do a complete uninstall, and I mean COMPLETE. Take everything from your DeusEx directory, even save games, and delete them. I don't know if this will work or not, but it's worth a try. BTW, why would you randomly just go back and try reinstalling for no reason at all?
**NOTE-- Make sure to backup save games in another directory somewhere so that you're not pissed off when you reinstall.

I had taken Deus Ex off my HD a few months ago when I took most of my games off (I was going to sell my comp, but the deal fell through). I went to re-install it when a friend of mine mentioned he was playing SS again...I'll try that complete uninstall thing though.

Thanks for the suggestion Bandit, but unfortunately it was unsuccessful. :)
