Just saw this article at PC Gamer: (
http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/04/19/thief-4-will-bring-more-than-just-stealth/) http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/04/19/thief-4-will-bring-more-than-just-stealth/.
The dev in question is EM general manager Stephane D’Astous, who also says, "There are a lot of challenges to bringing back a great cult IP, but we consider it like a new IP and we are going to respect the spirit of the franchise like we did with Deus Ex." I'm not sure if one can consider it like a "new IP"--something that one could start with a clean slate without worrying about ties to the past--while at the same time being able to "respect the spirit of the franchise," which requires a definite acknowledgement of the past and a responsibility to the gameplay and story that has come before. It seems a bit paradoxical to me.
I've never played any of the Deus Ex games, so I can't really form an opinion based on comparisons between T4 and DE:HR, but from what I've gathered from others, Human Revolution was a bit of a disappointment to a good chunk of the long-time fan base, with criticisms that it was too linear, and that it even made the mistake of including boss fights (!). If that's the idea D’Astous has in mind when he says T4 will bring "more than just stealth," that makes me very nervous. Am I alone?

No, you're not alone. The T4 announcement thread is currently discussing this very topic. They should probably move it to this thread though?

And here I thought I might have actually made it here first with this. I never start threads, but when I didn't see a thread for this story already, I jumped. I guess I didn't look closely enough before I did. :p .

If it's tiny news, maybe not news, or nothing really new but freshly reiterated, it gets put in the main thread, but if it's really new or kinda big, it gets its own thread. :)
Unfortunately, Stéphane hasn't said anything new about T4 since the May 2009 interviews, but he sometimes chooses different wording that might signify a change of meaning.

That looks absolutely delicious.

Wow...it didn't take long for this thread to derail. :p

The thread hasn't derailed, there's only been a delightful interlude.

Bringing "more than just stealth" and "respecting the spirit of the original" seems contradictory. EM must have politicians on their staff.
