ADDING "PARANOIA" TO "HYSTERIA" NOW, ARE WE, TAFFERS?It's been a few weeks since someone could say there was "meltdown" in this sector. RSS Feeds dialed in to freak-outs. ROLL-EYES!
I swear people WANT this shit. S'okay. I'm easy. With all the crap going on, it's easy to type over-caffeinated explode-y words. BOO-YAH!
Didja know Stephane's been quoted as stating that T4 was announced (

GDC 2010? That's something to emote over on a frikkin' Thief 4 board.
On a board where people aren't happy with EM's lack of contact for unknown reasons, to inject more history of withholding of knowledge, also for withheld reasons, isn't gonna get a positive reaction. As far as I can remember, Goldmoon's the gabbiest of the non-talkers.

Come on, man, it's
hundreds of taffers that keep it to themselves, who won't share, but only insist it may only be discovered through playing it for one's self, *mischievous grin*
What are you talking about? As has been pointed out they're good games, worth playing and if you want to read about them there are (
http://www.ultimaaiera.com/) other sites which contain much more pertinent information. There's no big conspiracy to keep information from you.
I also seem to remember from interviews that LGS intentionally moved away from connections with Ultima after the Underworld games so I don't share Goldmoon Dawn's conviction that the links were more than a passing influence.

I have absolutely no idea either what this secret society of Ultima fans is that jtr7 is talking about. No one ever sent me an invite, even though I've played all Ultimas IV-IX and UW 1&2 (and U7 could be my all-time favourite game)... or is the society such a well-kept secret that I may belong to it even without realising it?
Seriously though, I don't understand your statement at all. The last true classic in the Ultima series is soon 20 years old, so is it any wonder that people aren't talking about it that much anymore? There used to be a lot more Ultima fansites on the net, but many of them are sadly long gone by now... perhaps they were taken down for breaching the rules of the secret Ultima fans society? I could talk about Ultima all day long, so why don't you start an Ultima thread here, and I'll be happy to share my Ultima experiences with you. :p
As for any Ultima connections or references in the Thief series, I can't say that I've ever noticed any. I suppose that a lot of people at LGS had played their Ultimas, so they probably were influenced by it, but there aren't many things in Thief that remind me of Ultima at all.

I still don't understand what exactly "it" is that's not being shared, or being kept secret. Especially in the age of youtube, where you don't even have to play a game anymore to know it from top to bottom.
Goldmoon Dawn on 4/5/2012 at 21:54
Well, now that all the heavy hitters have weighed in, Ide say that this case is closed.

Which cements even further the notion that the first wave of kids who grew up on computer games in the 80's are truly blessed. You can look up a play through of Ultima IV as an adult who already knows what life is all about, but it would never be the same. Furthermore, as was stated much earlier, mentioning system requirements and hard drive space for Ultima IV is almost comical. There is virtually nothing stopping anyone from playing this game. Click the picture for free play on gog.

Released in 1985, Ultima IV was the first in the "Age of Enlightenment" period of Ultima games. It truly was a step forward in gaming, as it focused not on defeating some generic evil force with traditional "hack & slash" gameplay, but offered a story-driven quest based on ethical dilemmas presented to the player in an attempt to acheive enlightenment.

Its like what, a 500k download? Which is even more remarkable, since the games of today often cannot manage to cram a fraction of Ultima achieved regardless of gig upon gig of million dollar development. What do you get? You get a couple hours of sitting around scrutinising why it took them so long and cost so much to make, and then usually forget about it not long after. By the end of Ultima IV, you were left with a profound experience and not only felt like you achieved something "special", but perhaps had grown and evolved yourself in the process.
500k !!!!

Dude, give it up, this isn't an Ultima thread. You and jtr have already derailed (destroyed?) this thread enough.

True, but the thread is about what is influencing the next game and where it is going. Ultima - or more to the damn point - Garriott was a partial influence in the beginning, and a huge influence on LGS in their early days. I dont find it to be that outlandish to speak of it. Have I been a bit fanatical about it? Yes perhaps, and for that I apologise.
There, see? All roses. :ebil:
Also, this...
