Going back to my torchlight bitching, I just realized... the skill tree progression is utterly fucked up. Let's look at Ricochet, 88% DPS damage at 4mana cost. Lets do the upgrade, going from 88%->100% and 4->5 mana. Cool I'm more power- watit... that's a 13% damage increase at a 25% extra cost WTF?! This is just as bad for the Explosive shot. And the traps are the worst - the Flame trap which, when maxed out (Lv10), deals 54% more damage at a 245% (!) greater mana cost (11->27). Uuhhh... wtf? The more you upgrade the less efficient you become.
Yes I know I am not taking into account "time" as a factor here, but we're talking about either quick shots you will inevitably keep spamming tens of times, or traps that are so mana hungry you want to minimize their cost as much as possible. In either case, with each upgrade you see increasingly more diminishing returns. And honestly, if it takes a bit longer to dish out the same damage, then that's just more time for your mana to regen too (and you're a vanquisher, you're either standing on the sides or running away so time is cheap).
The whole reason I even noticed this discrepancy is because Ive been saving a few points and just did a mass-update of a few levels on the explosive arrow and now im burning through mana way faster now but not really seeing much of an improvement in my killability. Can I downgrade back please?
And the same applies to all the skills. I have about 10 skill points unassigned atm because I was saving them up for higher-tier shit but now I dont think I want to upgrade them anymore. Might as well spend it on some BS skill like the adventurer or pet master, at least they dont have drawbacks that outweight the postivies

Umm the skill takes your current weapon's "damage per second" value and uses 88% of that to inflict damage.

How bizarre

On top of the damage of the regular damage, in ricochet it'll be 88% dps when it ricochets on additional enemies, torchlight had quite some issues though.
The increasing manacost is to balance it with your vastly growing and regenerative mana at higher levels.
But then again, these are issues that I would imagine blizzard wants to solve with d3 but that some bitter elderly people call 'simplification'

Removing something is not fixing it. Go away.

Most often fixing something involves removing something that just doesn't fit in, or doesn't play well with other things.
It's just that the very THOUGHT that something isn't there anymore hurts in the mind of purists, or that complexity is always better.
But then again, by all means be an armchair designer Koki.
