DICE says modern gamers would be unable to "understand" Frostbite 2 engine - by thiefinthedark

it's that the sheer amount of work required to do anything substantial with newer engines means they're only really practical for large teams
I don`t even know anymore. It might be true. It might also be that DICE (with help of some excitable journos) is trying to paint their engine as the new light-years-ahead/Crysis-like thing, untouchable by mere mortals. Since it has not even been released yet, it`s hard to judge.
But even mega-complex products like ARMA 2 have an editor. RAGE/Skyrim also are looking promising. So this BF3 better be really advanced or the geezer will have some backtracking to do.
EDIT: This Monkey Island rendition was rather impressive...they managed to keep the original style, not bad!

Yeah I'm happy with the (
http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/05/05/rage-to-ship-with-full-level-editor-id-studio/) news coming out for Rage, just because it's such a pretty looking game... And just their attitude, admitting it might take a lot of developer skills to do anything, but the editor comes with the engine.

Want to mod Rage? Good. Speaking to PC Gamer at a recent press event, Id Creative Director Tim Willits revealed that the PC version of Rage will support modding and level design right out of the box. All you need to do, says Tim, is “Pull down the console, type ‘id studio', then press enter. Then, bam, there's all the tools we use.”
As for what you'll be creating, that's a little trickier; Id's technology has moved on since you could fit 100′s of Doom levels on a CD. “Building levels from scratch is more difficult,” says Tim, “because we have a layer system in some of the levels. I can foresee somebody modding up Wellspring (a town in-game) and adding different characters, giving them different voice-over.” But if you've got the development skills to use it, the level editor will be there. “It's built into the engine,” says Tim.
Or as the first comment says that fits with this thread:

Regular developer: "Well, sorry our engine is too complicated"
ID-software: "Well, our engine is too complicated but if you think you can handle it: fine!

Yeah, they should implement a console command to open the Frostbite 2.0 editor, just so everyone can get a good laugh while all of the missing linked libraries and tools scroll by.
