Is it now possible to make a really large forest without sectioning it, like in Gothic 2 f.e.? Or there still is some kind of obstacle?

Yes. But there's always a limit. Here's a paste from the included

Hmm,
Max visible objects: 1280 (from 128)
Max drawn terrain polys: 20480 (from 1024)
Why 1280 and 20480, why not 12800 and 204800, I mean may be it's still not enough in some cases... or 1280/20480 would be like 3 frames/sec even on the most modern hardware?

To be honest, 20480 and 1280 are pretty huge already, it's gonna take some time before someone actually reaches these limits.
However I just noticed something :

That's disapointing compared to the rest. The cells limit is the one I'm having the most trouble with. In all my Rocksbourg missions, I've hit this limit pretty fast, and I'm always on the edge trying to stay below the limit. You add one cylinder somewhere and the cells account can grow up pretty fast, it's kinda random.
So the fact we can have more polys, more brushes & stuff, it's not really gonna help because the cell limit will become THE problem for everyone now...
Or maybe I misread it.

I was thinking almost the same. This is why I like to find out how easily you can reach this limit, before digging deeper into the other improvements.
Right now, I'm expanding the Life of the Party OM by merging it with two other rooftop missions. I changed the layout of the mission in a way, that Angelwatch is visible from all places within Dayport, which is pretty neat :)

I wonder why this was only increased by such a small amount?
32760 seems awfully close to the maximum value for a signed 16-bit integer.

I'm already fighting the new max-cell limit, but I think I can manage to stay under it.
I think having an ultimate limit is good, I do wish it was a little higher though.
