So I guess the warning is don't get too carried away with detail except where it's truly warranted.
Can we use the new features to make for example smooth arches without breaking the cell limit? Or is every brush-made detail added to the cell count?

How did you disable it ?? I thought it was disabled by default because it is commented out in cam_ext.cfg. Did you un-comment it?
The code is disabled by default. I had turned it on (by un-commenting it) to see the new
changes to mantling. After hearing about not being able to crouch on crates, I commented it out again.

I've experienced the can't-crouch-on-crate problem, and it seems to have nothing to do with either old or new mantling.
The crate at the very beginning of Blackmail is a good place to test this.

I don't think cell creation works that way exactly. Here is the LGS OPTIMIZE.DOC which explains it with step by step example missions.

There used to be that problem though of having too many brushes/cells intersect with one another. Perhaps that's what Willie meant. For instance, if you made a small room with 100 cylinders in it, you'd get that error. Can't remember the exact error though. (EDIT-the error was 'draw_surface: too many vertices')
I should test to see if it still exists...doesn't seem like it. I made a 60x60x60 room with over 11,500 cells in it, and it optimizes with no problem in 5 seconds.

Well the addition on crouching off ladders I would think would be the first place to check for can't-crouch-on-crate problem.

Vlad Midnight is back from the dead? Jeez, this is resurrecting all the old zombies! We should see an upward spike in FMs. Gonna be a very Merry Christmas, indeed.

I have been trying the crate at the beginning of Blackmail. Sometimes, I can crouch on it right away, other times I can`t crouch. Exiting out of Thief and restarting seems to work most of the time. I will experiment some more with different levels. The other mission I tried crouching was the Fan Mission 'The Docks'. Crouching worked for me on that level everytime I tried it.
Edit: Crouching on crates only works for me with the new mantling code turned off. With the code on, no crouching on crates or barrels is possible (and jumping on crates makes no noise).

My experience was that you can't crouch on a crate until it's been picked up and dropped.
