I played thief 1 a while ago. I remember my initial frustration due to the sneaking - even walking up behind an enemy slowly could sometimes alert him and end up in miserable death. Easily the most realistic sneaking ever...
Cue in today, when I am playing thief 2. All of a sudden, I feel like all guards have become deaf. I can literally run up to a guard from behind (at full running speed, holding shift and standing up) on carpet, wood and gravel, and they wont notice.
what gives?

Actually I was thinking a similar thing just the other day. I fired up Thief 2 for the first time in a couple of years and have made it through to complete Life of the Party.
I'm playing through on Expert and I've not really been having any trouble. I'm not ghosting it, and I am knocking out the occasional guard, but it certainly seems easier than I recall it every being before.

Have you played any FM's at all David? There are some really good ones.
The guards do at times seem pretty dense, and deaf if you ask me. Many times I just run right past them, and they have crappy eye sight as well. *They should of seen me*
Some FM's do offer more of a challenge when it comes to AI sensitivity, they can be harder to deal with, and WILL in fact hear you, and you're busted, which is a welcome change.

What, are you saying the guards are less alert than they were six or seven years ago? Maybe they've just become fed up with guard duty?

I personally remember playing an FM where a guard on the other side of the screen went into search mode when I started picking the lock on a chest. Oh and there was another one where one specific guard could see me on the other side of a large courtyard with my lightgem only slightly in the yellow (This particular guard really pissed me off seeing as how he would come running through the mist towards me when I couldn't even see him on his patrol route).

One I just played recently that had sensitive AI was, *The Fortress by the Sea* by Ottoj55. I got busted for opening a door, some of it was crazy. Went back the next day, and played better, I just had to get in the right frame of mind. It was challenging.

Tired of the damp, and the cold, and potato, potato, potato.
On behalf of all the guards:
"We go through this all the time. ...Something goes wrong. Lord Bafford, Lord Donal, Sheriff Truart-We've worked for all of them and always gotten fired because someone broke in, something got stolen, or someone got killed! I'm always gettin' distracted...! When this job is over...I'm done..."
Might'nt the patch've tweaked the guard's sensitivity settings? Or is the ease of use simply a sign of the player's mastery?

Is that an actual quote from the game? I don't remember that one, but if it is I need to hear it :laff:
