I've got both Thief DP & Thief Gold installed and I've noticed that in Thief Gold the water goes dark when you look down, but in TDP it works just fine. At first I thought that it had something to do with the texture upgrades available on The Circle, but I did a fresh install and it's still there. Does anyone know why this is?

In Bonehoard and Lost City the water seemed to light up when jumped into, and the screen got weird dark lines similar to sun rays that come through thick branches. Would seemed cool anywhere else but deep underground...

I've played Thief on 95, 98SE, and XP and all the versions from day one (1.14 through the patches, Gold and TMA -patched and not-) has been fine.
In, under or looking through. Only in TDS did the water take on different colors (tints).
No "rays" streaks, darkening etc.
Could it be your Video card(s)?

Possible, but that wouldn't explain why it's happening in Thief Gold and not TDP. I should also mention that I have no such issue in Thief 2 either. For the record my video card is a Geforce FX 5200 w/256 ram.

Are you playing one of them (or both) on software mode?

On TDP and Gold, looking underwater makes the screen completly black or brown. Thats why I don't play them anymore. I am unable to explain it.

Both played in hardware, not software mode. I would be apt to think it a video driver issue were it not for the fact that it only happens in Thief Gold.

It's a common problem. There are 2 fixes I know of. One isn't really a fix so much as a work-around. Save before you go in water, switch to software mode, go swimming, resurface and save, then switch back to hardware mode.
The other is to use the texture and model packs. I think it's the model pack that did the trick but together at least, they work. Once in a long while, the water will go a tad darker but you can still see ok.

I use Orgy's texture pack and Daemonite's model upgrade. It's the same with or without them. From what I can tell the problem doesn't seem to happen in places that are well lit under water. It seems to happen in less well lit, or dark areas.

No one mentioned to try using blackjack while underwater to test?
