Hi,
I got myself a copy of Thief - Gold today (original case, discs etc). I had previously thought that it's a single disc with the editor and a three mission campaign that takes place after the events in Dark Project, but it looks like it contains the whole of Thief: DP with the extra missions taking place during DP. That being true, what are the differences in Dark Project to Gold?
In the FAQ it says:
Thief: the Dark Project is the original game. Thief Gold features three additional missions and a number of improvements to the original ones. Thief Platinum is Thief: the Dark Project, only repackaged and patched.
I was hoping for something a bit more specific though.
Is there a list of specific changes in the installations of DP and Gold? Should I uninstall Thief: DP and only use Gold? What versions exist for Thief: DP, Gold and the editor? (my DP disc contains the 1.33 patch and Gold is version 1.37).
Thank you.

Thief Gold is TDP as it was originally envisioned. The three extra levels were actually part of the story, but they were scrapped due to time constraints. Thief Gold places these missions where they would've been, and the storyline is adjusted accordingly (no major changes, but a richer experience).
Thief Gold also contains bugfixes and other improvements to the original missions. The Sword in particular features a brand new secret area that's well worth discovering.
Version 1.37 is the final version. I've never actually played through TDP myself, but I can say that the additions to Gold are fantastic - some of my favourite parts of the game. Unless you're interested in seeing the changes between TDP and TG yourself, there's no reason to keep TDP installed, as TG contains all of it and more.

You can certainly have both of them installed on the same machine (just install Gold into a separate folder), and that's advisable, because not everyone finds Gold to be the better of the two. Worth having Gold, especially for the Blooper Reel and if you want to play fan missions, but some features of 1.37 can be considered detractions, rather than improvements.
And you could have just searched the forum for the thousand-and-one identical topics, to answer your questions.

Is there a point-by-point comparison of these differences?

This I believe is not strictly true. It was planned to have one mission per talisman (new folk will find out what that's all about soon enough) but the particular Thief Gold missions were made from the ground up for Thief Gold. Some might have appeared as earlier level ideas or concepts and may even have been a part of some iteration of the storyline. But to say those particular three were cut from some master storyline is, I think, incorrect.
I think. I could be forgetting something.

You can look at it like this:
'Thief: The Dark Project' is more concise of the two, while 'Thief Gold' expands the story narrative and exposes a little more of the game's universe.
Both games are worth having and playing. I may be wrong, but I think the big thing that turns most people off to 'Thief Gold' is the mission 'Thieves Guild'. I know I hated it, but I loved every other inch of 'Thief Gold'. 'Song of the Caverns' is brilliant, 'The Mage Towers' is fun, and the changes made to 'The Lost City' and 'The Sword' put a deeper twist on Thief lore.
I have both installed. I'm also very much looking forward to Ataricom's 'Thief 2: The Dark Project'.

I don't know if anyone's gone to that trouble -- no revision list in the Gold readme, or anything like that. Just endless, meandering dialogues on the pros & cons at good ol' TTLG.
But, then......you've got three years on me 'round these parts; so you tell me.

Quite simply, Thief Gold is way too long and inconsistent over Thief The Dark Project. All the new missions in this game were just very tiring in the scheme of the entire game. To me the Dark Project is great as it has a great variety of human/undead/burrick missions whilst Gold simply expands and makes the fantasy in missions like The Sword seem overlong.

I think Thief Gold is the best. It expands the story, and fleshes out the talismans the way it should be. Thieves Guild is a rather confusing mission, and kind of out of place, but well worth the play. Play both versions and decide for your self. I can tell you that the rope arrows work better in Thief Gold because they fixed it a bit.
Also along with the other mentioned mission changes in gold, is the additional area with fire monster in the haunted cathedral level as well as lots of other stuff that the previous posts mentioned. As i said play both and decide for your self, thats the best way.
