Digging Deep; The little things in Thief you never quite accepted... - by TheGrimSmile

That Garrett is not more deft in mantling or rope-climbing when empty-handed.
Actually, I have a question: In DP, the cutscene where Constantine hires Garrett, we can see stalks/vines arising from the carpet and starting to entwine the chair's foot, and then Garrett takes away his foot (shifts in his chair).
Is he really that stupid?

He's stupid on many occasions, it seems, but if I were to make up a reason for him not noticing the vine, I'd say he's watching his hosts very carefully. Ignoring the fact that he drank the Biddleybong, he did feel his life was threatened. But I don't think that covers it very well.:p

As for the original question:
There are two gameplay elements in T1/T2 I still find annoying and often can't get to work after all those years: climbing down and mantling up. In particular, many places where I'm supposed to mantle up seem to be about 1 pixel too high, or too narrow, to do it, lately experienced in T2X's museum (gaining entry wasn't possible with climbing/mantling up, I needed a vine arrow). And I can't count the instances of plunging to death because I missed a ladder by a few pixels. My death count in the Thief games and Thief FMs may surpass that of all other games I've played together, almost exclusively because of falling. It only becomes bearable because reloading only takes a few seconds. Having said that, I still prefer games with a meaningful third dimension to those without...

Yes, yes. And I never manage (is it possible at all?) to climb down onto rope arrows? I mean, that you shot it into the side of a platform, so that you can climb+mantle up, and when you are done with your business a'top, you can't climb back onto the rope arrow. I find this extremely annoying (especially in the FM 'The Item', in the giant room).

And one more thing... That Garrett thinks it necessary to remark on statues, people, clothes, weather conditions, recent archeological discoveries, mental state, and probably eveything else, but he never-ever utters a comment on taking a headdive into the sewers, and then going home drenched with... stuff.
That's when I start to wonder whether the guard with the "what's this smell" line is not, in fact, smelling Garrett :cheeky:
And since our Master Thief never seems to change his clothes (okay, maybe between the games), I'm surprised that burricks don't welcome him as one of them...:eww:

Unused voice file gar0502:
"A sewer never looked so appealing."
A Thief Gold thief's mutter (used?):
th1aotk2: "[Oh my god....] What the hell['s that] smell down here? Who puts a [stinkin'] hideout in the sewers?"
:D

Okay... Then that you can reuse vine arrows.
That you have to buy equipment from Viktoria.
That falling into water from a great height doesn't hurt you.
That traps have, seemingly, infinite ammo.
That Garrett, upon stealing a key, may instantly know which door it opens.
That you can steal spectacles, yet you can never see people wearing them.
That you can bear out Basso while wading through water, when normally unconscious people don't really hold their breath :ebil:
That you need Basso to open that goddamn door...
That... and this really is "shocking"... in DS the sky is different in every district! The Moon is at different places, it is always full, and even the stars aren't the same.
Also, in South Quarter, in Black Alley, if you climb up on the wall over the "sewer" (drainhole?) with the money and the water crystal in it, and you climb right to the top over the ledge, and you go TPS, and turn the camera... Behind the wall, lo and behold, there's a window in the middle of nothing (you can see the lightbeam from it only)!
That in Song of Caverns, if you drop a sandbag on AI, it doesn't harm them.
That you never actually see Mechanists doing anything.
Where in the hell is the ball in Angelwatch???
That in DP and MA bows have no strings.
That in MA Orland is bald... Is it the privilege of the First Keepers that they may have hair?:cheeky:
That the Babies can blow trumpets. That's so... cute?
That in DS, when you backstab someone, well, I presume that it means slitting their throat. Yet they still scream.
