Unless things have changed, the only thing I have against Direc2Drive is that you can't mod the games you get from there, and you have to wait for specialized patches specific to the platform. Beyond that, it's a decent service for those of you who absolutely hate the idea of using a client to play your games.

People don't hate Steam, they love it and the market share shows it.
Lol rofls haha bonk.
Alternatively Valve got the drop on everyone by bundling Steam with HL2 and means to maintain that by getting Steamworks (vile trojantastic monopolistic resource stealing data miner 100x worse than securom ever was) inflicted upon every game under the sun.
The only thing worse would be fucking GFWL being bundled with everything.

Why steam is on the top of my list:
my game collection is stored "in the cloud", meaning, I can go whereever I want, log in to anyones installed steam on my account, and have access to my games collection.
no limitations on installs, no limitations to what computer you use, only that you are logged in on a single location at a time.
in a constantly connected, highspeed country (such as sweden) this is the perfect solution.
the bad side of the digital distribution:
publishers still take their part where they should have none :), prices are still as high as shelfprice.

Not really, like 95% of games on the service still store your saves, MP stats, configuration files (eg key binds) locally on your HDD.

Actually, all over exaggeration aside, I think the thing I dislike most about Steam is the need for its adherents to prosetylise about it in every thread under the sun, even when specifically asked
not to.

..other than Valve's steam

Maybe that wouldn't happen if other people (such as the first to reply itt) didn't mention it.
I've only used Steam and one other which was ad supported to get Rogue Trooper free. I can't remember the name but I think other people will know it. DL speed compared to Steam, ad support was ok considering the game was free.

I've had no trouble with GOG or Impulse (which I tend to use mostly for Stardock's own games to be sure, but also for a few indie / lower priced games like Starscape). Impulse I would rate up there close to Steam in terms of usability.

I think the thing I dislike most about Steam is the need for the people who hate it to rail against it at every opportunity, even when it doesn't make sense to bring it up.

Just wanted to say that my Steam migration from Vista to Windows 7 was the easiest part of the whole migration.
How is it for these other services?
