I wasn't sure I could be bothered to go back to the Eidos Thief 4 forum, but I've had to return for this. Thank you, Skaadi, such a brilliant idea.

Hey no probs :)
Though guys, I'd just like to stress that this is probably the only opportunity you'll ever get to do something like this. Having an opportunity to send messages that SR is actually going to read isn't something you'll get to do every week :P
The thread's going to be around for a while longer and it'd be really nice if we could get some more messages, it's just a really personal way of letting him know he's appreciated :)

Dear Stephen Russell.
What I want to say is that you've really brought the character out of Garrett, making him more believable and in the end, fondly remembered and loved. I want to thank you for lending your voice to Garrett and I hope that we will get to hear more from you in future Thief games. I wish you all the best in your endeavors and success to follow your every step/shadow.
Yours Sincerely,
SilenTaffer
P..S Even though Thief 4 will not use your voice, I'm wondering whether you would be up for releasing a voice pack for Thief 4 in the future :D

I don't think there's ever a bad time to say thanks, and it's waaaaay overdue for me. I wanted to share this here as well because SR's voice has meant so much to me:
Mr. Russell,
I can't adequately express how much I've appreciated your characterization of Garrett throughout the Thief series. I discovered the games at a very low point in my life (I had just been diagnosed with a fatal heart disease). I escaped into the Thief universe for some time and though it may sound silly, feeling like I could "become" Garrett for even a short period of time helped me to cope with my real life struggles. That would have never happened if you had not done such a great job at making me believe I was truly a professional Thief - able to rise above the circumstances and master my own destiny. I return to the games today for a bit of that escapism and the voice of Garrett warms my heart like an old friend. I'm not a fanatical "gamer" per se, but Thief and Garrett have become an important part of my own story, and I've been excited to introduce the master thief to my children and friends throughout the years. It wouldn't have meant as much without your characterization, and for all this I will be eternally grateful. Your work has helped me in such a tangible way, and I just wanted to let you know and say thank you. I hope events change course and you will be able to continue voicing this character who looms so large in the imagination and wonder of so many fans.

I shall follow suit and thank Mr. Russell. May we call you Stephen? I feel like I've known you for years, yet we have never met. Your voice rings true to so many of us. Your voice has brought many smiles to our faces. We can't begin to thank you for all the work you have done for our beloved Thief game. Here is wishing much success to your future endeavors, you will always be Garrett to me, and to so many others. Stephen, you will always be the voice of Garrett. (I almost want to cry.)

Mr. Russell, (may I call you Stephen, too? :)), your voice-over work in Thief 1&2&3 is just amazing. Like many of us, I was very surpized when I've read that, in Thief 2, Garrett and Karras were voiced by the same actor, you Stephen. The first my thought was: "It's impossible!" The second one was: "Why not? Just remember how brilliant he works as Garrett and Benny!" I suppose, that's what is called a true acting technique.
Your voice is a diamond, and we all will feel ourselves robbed if Thief 4 will be released without this jewel. I personally join the Dominus' proposal about the voice pack for Thief 4 with you as Garrett. Please don't forget us and visit us anytime you want, because we love you and are always glad to see you here, Stephen :).

That's really helpful for skaadi, thank you. :)

Dear Mr. Russell,
Thank you for being such a HUGE part of my life in the form of Garrett for the past fifteen years. I was just twelve years old when I first sat down with one of my childhood friends to play "Thief: The Dark Project". An "anti-hero" was a completely new concept to me and you completely sold the idea to this youth. So many memorable lines. We still quote your lines to each other on occasion.
Thief got me through my teen years and a lot of other life hurdles along the way. You ARE Garrett and there is no "Thief" game without your voice. You created so many other memorable voices in the Thief universe as well.
I have sought out and played other games with your voice acting talents as well. Thank you for all you do. We all want you to return as our cynical world weary anti-hero in "Thief" titles to come.
Sincerely,
Justin A. Crews

Hello Skaadi, it's a great idea, it was about a damn time somebody did this.
Call me a sceptic, but even though I truly appreciate your idea and applaud your dedication I cannot shake the feeling that what we are doing here now is making the PR department of EM very happy. In other words, if you're working for them, then "Good job, Sir". No sarcasm intended. If not, then maybe you found a subtle way to help them to contain somehow this "anti-new Garrett" movement, to some degree. I'll stop here, I don't intend to derail the thread.
On topic:
Dear Mr.Russell,
your priceless performance created characters that will stay with me for a long time, expecially Garrett. For me YOU ARE Garrett and nobody, no matter how skilled, will be able to take your place. I was shocked and sadden by the news that you will not be giving the voice to the new Garrett, but I really hope to hear more of you, if not in Thief then somewhere else. I've been playing games for almost 30 years but I have never seen another character so strongly linked to his voice actor, an actor able to infuse life into a shapeless form and convince countless people that that invisible video game avatar was almost a living person, with complex personality and refined taste.
thank you

Okay, calling you a sceptic. :p
The petition, or anti-new Garrett movement you label it as, is an entirely separate matter. So, shake off that feeling. :cheeky:
The thank you card is a genuine opportunity to send a special message to SR, no strings attached.

Thanks guys! We're on our way to getting a halfway decent number, keep 'em coming :)
Taffer Keeper - Nope, certainly not employed by Eidos / working toward a specific agenda on their behalf :P I just really really wanted something tangible for SR that showed Thief fans support, and that's pretty much the crust of it.

Good to know! I've been in PR dep for some time and learnt some of the tricks, and this one would be one of the "by the book" ones. But it's seems it's a professional handicap speaking...
