Director Tim Hetherington Killed in Libya

Ironically, I watched Restrepo last night so this comes as somewhat shocking news...and only somewhat as the man truly took risks. Which is what I admired most about him, here's an artist willing to lay his life on the line for the sake of creating his art -- to bring us a work devoid of the safety and banality that is so rife is today's world of art and entertainment. With Restrepo, he brought war to us the way it really is: smelly, dirty, and devastating.

Truly a remarkable voice that has been silenced way too soon.

I saw some of the pictures that the photographer who was killed with him had been taking. Holy Christ, there are lots of shots of an actual firefight happening inside a burning house! Flaming walls, AK blasts, all that hairy stuff!

I get the impression that journalists of this sort are about as certain as soldiers that they will eventually get killed. Doesn't make it any less unfortunate and/or tragic, though.

Probably MORE certain - they don't have as many people watching their backs, frankly, and they're more likely to be killed by friendly fire.
