How do people feel about the ambient background sound in menus of the Thief 1/1g/2/2x/3 games ? I eventually got sick of it because going from a loud menu to a soft and silent game or vice versa broke the mood. Thieves like stealth and silence, don't they? I like the menu sounds about as much as seeing a bright white flash before hiding in some dark shadows. The Escape key also seems more useful (compared to alt-tab) if it pauses with no sound blasting through the speakers so I can answer the phone or talk with someone temporarily. If anyone is interested, is this helpful to disable it in thief 1/1g/2/2x,
Code:
In dark.cfg (or user.cfg if using FMs),
; metagame sounds - first cut
metasnd_game_def_ambient1 silent
metasnd_game_main_ambient1 silent
metasnd_game_saveload_ambient1 silent
metasnd_game_loadout_ambient1 silent
metasnd_game_game_ambient1 silent
metasnd_game_book_ambient1 silent
metasnd_game_options_ambient1 silent
; defaults were respectively: metalp2, metalp1, metalp3, metalp3, metalp3, metalp4, metalp3
Is this helpful to disable it in thief 3,
Code:
In .\Content\T3\Sounds\SchemaMetafile_HardDrive.csc
Hex edit and replace UI_METALOOP at hex address 044175, with XI_METALOOP.
Leave the sound as is for menu title, credits, volume slider, and sound effects.
EDIT>> Optional to use the little hexeditor below for convenience. Unzip to the same folder as '.\Content\T3\Sounds\SchemaMetafile_HardDrive.csc'. Run 'hexeditor ui_metaloop_off.bat' to disable, 'hexeditor ui_metaloop_on.bat' to restore. Run 'hexeditor' by itself to show help and syntax. As always, I claim no responsibility and you should backup 'SchemaMetafile_HardDrive.csc'.

Are the sounds of AI footsteps considered ambient? If so, I then I think those sounds are critical to the game/FM. It's the music that gets a bit too loud sometimes and actually blocks the ambient sounds.

He's talking about 'ambient sounds in the menus'.

Footsteps are not ambient and luckily I was not talking about ingame sounds. For TDS, some could say the music volume control in options reduces the ambient in the menus and ingame, however I have found it also reduces sound effects which exist in the music that make the game more interesting. The sound effects fade in and out of the game periodically for all missions, starting from the castle to the cradle (TDS).
- I consider music has a rhythm/melody. Usually music is ambient but I like to distinguish them apart from each other.
- I consider ambient sounds to be the long continuous breath of sounds which never fade out and do not exist in real life. However they can technically fade out if the mission was designed to switch between different ambients depending on where the player is in the level.
- I consider ambient sound effects to be short attention-getting sounds which fade in and out, affect the mood and are not triggered specifically by the environment or the players actions.
- I consider environment sound effects to be footsteps, crickets, waterfalls, etc which must exist for feedback from the gameplay mechanics.

I added a little hexeditor in the first post if it might be convenient.

I like the ambients in menus, but not when they are changed to something obnoxiously loud. Something rather soothing would be helpful for those that need to ESC from the FM for a while.

I thought they were already kind of soft and soothing. Maybe change to wave music or soft jazz? :erm: Can't imagine anyone making it obnoxiously loud though.

Calendra's Legacy had obnoxious ambients during the loading screen.

I don't know, I'm so used to hearing the menu when I fire it up, it just wouldn't be the same.
