The menu ambients are fine, I just don't like the extremely loud metal-on-metal-clash sound when I enter/exit/click the menus. The sound of a dead robot body thrown across the room is high-pitched and wimpy by comparison.
I did some snooping around and the sound file in question is probably in the SFX folder inside SND.CRF, but I can't spot it among the 700+ files there.

"Dead Robot Body?" That's a good name for a band.
LVFLOOR1 sounds like the one. And I agree, it's clearly the wrong sound for clicking menu items. What were they thinking?

I am such a dork sometimes. *reminds self to thoroughly read thread titles in future* :o
Ambient sound during menus doesn't bother me; except if it's an FM with particularly loud & clamorous music/sounds.

I don't mind the ambients, just the volume. Sometimes it's like watching a quiet scene on TV with a jarring cut to a commercial. If the volume was cut by a third, or if it faded gently in, I'd have no complaint. After exiting to the menu a couple of times I learn to be ready for the volume jump.
Is the *.wav file for that ambient only used for the menu? If so, I could just open the file in a wave editor, decrease the volume, and save it without affecting the gameplay.

Sounds good jtr7. Fade in would be okay too. Meanwhile if too loud, extract the sound file you want with winzip to the 'Snd' and appropriate subfolder. Edit it to lower the volume. The files are metalp1 for example (mentioned in the first post). I did it for one FM i played which had music full of loud static and clipping noise. I noticed the extracted file takes priority over what is in 'snd.crf'. (If not, you will have to extract all and then backup to 'snd1.crf'.)
"Dead Robot Body?"
In T1/2, the files are tick1, tick2, select1, select2, to enter/exit/click, but they sound more like something opening/closing and not too loud. In TDS, it is soft too. Something must be fishy with the computer. You could also manually play those wave files in windows media player or whatever and see how loud it is. (see dark.cfg where these sound files are setup)

metasnd_game_main_ambient1 silent ; metalp1
I don't think that'll work, the comment on the same line will probably be interpreted as part of a filename. With "silent" you won't notice, since when the sound file isn't found, it's silent anyway.
One can also use
Code:
metasnd_game_main_ambient1 whatever
then place "whatever.wav" in snd\sfx. I doubt the menu ambients are used anywhere else in the game, though.

Thanks for the correction jermi. I wanted to show the default value in case anyone needed to put it back. (Post is corrected above.)

Calendra's Legacy had obnoxious ambients during the loading screen.
I KNOW! God damn, I ripped my headphones off in shock every time I got back to the menu just before quitting. *GANG!!... G-GANG!!...* Arrgh. The whole campaign is awesome, but for that bloody menu ambience.
