You don't have to knock out the first guard or the guards in the explosion room to ghost. I jumped on the stuff to the left of the gate, hopped over the gate instead of walking past him, and, sticking to the wall, jumped behind a column. You can avoid knocking out the guards in the explosion room by jumping into the dumpster until the first guard turns around then hopping up onto the raised part of the room, trying to open the door and grabbing some loot, then climbing a bookshelf and mantling to the spot where you place the explosive. You can also mantle from the previous room and bypass the loot.
For the record, I didn't get ghost on that level because the guards outside spotted me after the explosion - but the guards in the room did not. I'm not sure if they were alerted by the explosion in a way that ruined the achievement.

Well, I like just trying. Even if it is technically impossible, I think the blog would be well worth following regardless.
I like just trying too :) I'm not really expecting a perfect ghost run playing this way (though I will do my best to collect as much loot as possible), but simply avoiding knockouts should be possible. In any case, thank you for checking out the site :) Drop a word when I actually start my run.

I do think it's a shame there's not a "Proper" ghost achievement for this game, where even KOs count against it. Of the levels I've played so far, I suspect it's entirely possible to completely ghost them, especially with clever use of Blink.
A favourite of mine is to lean around a corner, see a guard coming toward me, blink behind him and KO. I'm sure that could be used for ghosting too.
Good trick. Feel stupid for not trying that yet...

That is not bad! I like the way you illustrated some of the points you made with screenshots, and the detail you went into when describing your exploits. Carry on!

Just got this and really struggling to ghost the first mission.
As with many, it's the explosion room that is causing problems. I've worked out it's the stationary guard that gets alerted as soon as the explosion goes off. If I hide in the long metal box and lean left, I can see the red alert lights go off above that guard's head - every time.
So, I've had to knock that one out and hide his body in the metal box near him. This time, I was able to stay in the metal box after the explosion and no one found me.
Currently, in the sewers so I'll find out pretty soon if I made it undetected.
EDIT: Ghost was successful. Still 180 odd shoot in the loot and I know I missed pick pocketing the guard at the start as I refused to knock out the very first guard. Not sure where the rest is.

I've now finished this great game.
I gave up true ghosting in mission 6 until the end as it was just too time consuming. I knocked out a handful of people when there was no alternative (guard in explosion room, thugs guarding the shopkeeper) in the early missions and then went on a knockout spree level 6 and onwards.
I got the ghost tick for all missions apart from 2. I don't remember being seen although I suspect my attempt to knock out the thugs might have caused a problem.
Didn't upgrade any powers or equip any charms, and didn't kill anyone.
Closest game to Thief I've ever played.
Liked the keeper training reference in mission 7.

Well, I finished the game once as ghost. It was a pleasant experience with nice end. But I used only blink and slow time, no weapons, no other skills.
Now I replay it and I don't leave anyone alive. I like how the game changes if you play as a bad guy. For example Emily starts to draw murder scenes and told me that when she becomes an empress she would like to order to make 2 huge ships and crash them 1 into another and watch as all people on them drawn. She asks me if she is allowed to do that, after all she is going to be the new empress. Cute kid.
Also people in the sewers that were normal before are now weepers. Samuel doesn't like me and wanted to betray me. That's why I killed him in cold blood. The hag fishes feasted upon his flesh until all that was left was bones.
Men, women, every human I encountered I murdered with joy. Even the dogs. Maaan, killing dogs was an such unique and pleasant experience. The Boyle's party is now known as The Boyle's Massacre. Hoho. It's funny as I think of it now. Heads and limbs were flying everywhere. Spring razors are really effective in crowded areas. Eh... Even the outsider hates me now. I would kill him too if I had a chance. No joke.
Now I'm at the last mission and it will be the culmination of my killing spree. I will dismember everyone who stands in my way. I will sever limbs and behead people until the river become red with the blood of my enemies. Yes, a true blood bath. Mmmm. It will be a beautiful masterpiece and I will paint it with vicious joy.
I learned something about me during this playthrough. I want to be a supreme being of death. I want to decide who lives and who dies. If I had such power I would be a true death bringer - merciless, obdurate and brutal.
PS: BTW they should have made the civilians - women and men scream and run in panic when they witness a murder and cry and beg for mercy when cornered not just kneeling and waiting to be sliced. Cries and begging really excite the player. And they should have made the blood more. Also I would have loved to see Callista's tits when she takes a bath. This is very important.
