Why don't you knock out the guards and move their bodies away from the explosion area? If they're nearby, they'll die, and it'll be because of you: hence, it registers as a kill.

Actually this time they didn't for some reason, just replayed it a bit ago and for some reason none of them died. Guess it has to do with... I have no idea. By the way, does the game still count it as ghosting if you knock out people but are never seen and such? Also do knocked out people count towards overall chaos?

No, ghosting in Dishonored allows for KOs and chaos is only raised with kills. Of course, real ghosting doesn't allow KOs. I started a Ghost Challenge thread and I invite folks there.
