Dissapointed by the Cradle... - by guildmaster

In truth, I didn't have a clue about the Cradle before I got there except for whatever I'd read/heard in the game itself. Not knowing seemed to make it probably scarier than it would have been had I been forwarned. All I know is that it took me three times as long to complete that level as any other level in any of the Thief games!
I don't think I want to go back there anytime soon.

Hmm, the only one thing that really broke down some of the scare factor for me was how the staff sorta "glistened" occasionally, making a bit of grey flow over thier bodies. This revealed it in so much detail that it wasnt scary anymore, and it just looked like your average civilian wandering around, covered in tar. If they didnt put that in, then I probably would have handled the staff pretty desperately...
Also, the scariest thing really is stealthing through it really slowly , stopping whenever you see something, even if its just your imagination. Doing that, whilst hearing the ticking of the clock in the lobby makes a really bad experience

I thought that spoilt them too. It would have been better had they just been completely black.

I am so glad I didn't know anything about the level. I crept through t about .5mph and leaning around every corner. Always half-expecting to see something freaky. Some of what was freaky about the level was the very odd placement of furniture...
There is a chair sitting on top of the stair. WHY?!?!
There are stacks of chairs near windows. Was someone trying to desperately get out? I just remember cursing when the little girl said.
"Oh great, you burned my diary!"
"Now you have to burn all my things! HE HE HE HE!"

lol, RT! I, too, was convinced that everything had meaning in that level & would sit in the shadows & ponder the most trivial of details. Probably why it took me so damn long to make it through.

I'm sure null says somewhere that this was the chair the hall guard used to sit in.

The chair stares at the entrance of the Staff tower, where King No One watched his catastrophic plan unfold (manipulation of the girl in cell no. 9)

I thought thats the chair where she sat and watched it burn... is it just me or do all the women in the Cradle have a weird fascination with burning?

Correct, it was the occupant of Cell #9 who sat there. And I didn't really notice any of the other woman in the Cradle having a fascination with burning... unless you count Lauryl.
"Now, do this and this and this...."
I swear, she has to be the daughter of Brother Murus. Garrett really should have asked.

Apart from The Cradle, I didn't find any other Thief missions particularly scary. I geuss THC was pretty freaky for a bit, but you open the second set of double doors and see a hoard of zombies. Intimidating, but not terribly subtle. And Brother Murus helped a lot with the scary part being taken away. Thought he was a great addition, but it's a bit like watching the Ring with Santa Clause sat next to you...
Still, I thoroughly enjoyed THC. I WAS freaked out by St. Yora's, the place with all the broken down walls in the Barrack Rooms. Just turning a corner and hearing an eerie laugh with the rattling of chains....
However, when you step through into the Cradle there's nothing there. Garrett's little intro (despite the lack of those great cutscenes from the earlier games) has you freaked out a bit; even he's a bit rattled! You start investigating every time you hear a sound. When you hear the rattling in the attic....
Okay, I'll stop now. But I think this gets my point across. In my opinion, Cradle was the scariest Thief mission, and made TDS a lot more exciting.
PS. T-Smith: I think Lauryl was the daughter of Brother Murus! They both enjoy having master Thieves doing their laundry, both enjoy collecting stuff from when they died...
The list goes on!
