I think classic movies are the stuff of young directors on their way up, not old directors on their way down (with a few exceptions). But it can't be worse than Battleship or Transformers 2+. It may be as bad as Star Trek.
And while Blade Runner 2 is confirmed, we're *still* waiting for Neuromancer and Stranger in a Strange Land...

There's a lot of story potential in P.K. Dick's theme. So much that only Hollywood could screw it up.
If they don't blink, if they stay focussed on the characters and the question of what does it mean to be human, there's no reason a sequel should suck.... other than the aforementioned one...

It should have been a prequel.

Just have to tell myself that they cannot destroy the original, or the original director's cut or the director's this-is-the-last-version-seriously-dudes. It's all good.
But that still leaves the question why they cannot create new scifi sagas anymore. I watched "Sunshine" lately and while it was decent it was also an obvious an hommage to the original Alien movie, down to shots and angles.
It's like we have two established scfi universes now with the campy fantasy Star Wars and the hard boiled Alien/Blade Runner universe. And every future scifi film will have to find its place in the last one (because the first one is closed source).

Blomkamps Elysium might be what you're looking for? District 9 was certainly the best hollywood-style sci-fi debut I've seen since Terminator.
and obv Blade Runner sequel is a dodgy idea. Could work...... ?
HAH no it couldn't. It'll be gay as fuck.

One always has the option of not watching it to avoid spoiling one's perception of the concept.
I haven't actually seen the Director's Director's Cut yet, which I should given that apparently the first director's cut didn't really have much of a relationship with the Director...

So long as it is shot in 3D and has some tasteful product placement, I'm sure it'll be golden.
Also, what if the replicants had x-ray vision and could fly or transform themselves somehow?
In seriousness though, trying to make a film live up to the cult following BR has is tough one. The sweet spot to hit is probably only visible using atomic force microscopy.
