Well you just need to torrent rent it and watch it then.
It has to be said though, of course, that you really need to be in the right mood to watch it. I think even fans would agree with that. It's slow going (which is the old joke about its title) and it drips atmosphere in both the positive and negative sense of "drip". Soaking up the atmosphere, art direction, soundscape, and mood are as important as the story -- which is still really cool if you let it sink in, since it's about the cross between cybernetics & humanity -- but if you watch it too late at night you're going to have a hard time staying awake and following along. Yeah so, watch it with an open mind and in a sympathetic mood, maybe drink a Coke or Red Bull first, and you'll be rewarded for it.

I'm with fett on this - it's all been done to death by now. There is nothing left thematically and even the bit that they left out from the book with the completely fake replicant police station and Decker doubting he's human for what, 3 pages? has been flogged senseless by other films.
For once I kind of agree with Koyla too - but I think there are 3 sci-fi universes now. A campy bollocks one that is essentially for kids, the harder Alien/BR one and then there is the Will Smith one which has all the outwards gloss of gourmet potential but at it's heart is fast food.
Great track dema. I think I want it played on my deathbed. Sadly your Red Bull advice is awful. Watch it with alternating whisky and coffee, only of good quality.

No it wasn't good advice; you're totally right. I was just thinking about the alertness part, but a pot of black coffee and maybe some whiskey or a cigar are completely appropriate condiments for this movie.
Edit: That 3 part division made me think of three categories of sequel/reboot they could have on top of the original too. Like a 1980s The Thing which is grittier, darker and more convincing than the original (or as gritty and mature); a Terminator 2 / Aliens type which is more over the top and action-oriented than the originals but can be fun for what they are, though more fastfood like you say; or a Phantom Menace type which is the campy bollocks for kids that you want to disown from the originals.

I never asked for this.

Blade Runner sequel? oooo. First that remake of Total Recall gets announced + trailered (which had me going "that movie didn't even need a remake. Its awesome as IS") now this. I'll give it a chance and go see it, but I'm not expecting much.
The original Blade Runner is like it is due to the decade in which it came out to an extent, and nowadays sci-fi movies are done very differently.
Compare these 2 trailers (both being for Total Recall):

and
(

And you can see the difference in approaches to sci-fi can make on a movie as a whole. I'm willing to give this movie a chance however. But time will tell.

It depends on who's helming the project. Ridley hasn't done a sci-fi movie in 30 years, but he's not about to start doing his best Michael Bay impression with a project that has this much history (and baggage), not if Prometheus delivers what its trailers seem to promise.
Total Recall, though? Len Wiseman? The dude who did
Underworld and
Die Hard 4? Right. I'm sure it'll be slick and well-produced and manage to look and sound uncannily like a video game with a script that seems like it was banged out by a slightly retarded chimpanzee in an alcoholic fugue that had been trained to write with the pen firmly ensconced between its ass cheeks.

Given the opiate level, scientific know-how, and general willingness of hollywood to engage with a big-budet fairly hard-edged sci-fi dystopia mostly focused on confusion, loss and paranoia without turning it into a lot of pretty backdrop for futuristic weapons to go off, I'm considering this thoroughly guilty until I see a shred of evidence otherwise. The smart bet is on it being bullshit, given hollywood sci-fi in general and the usual motivation for reactivating a decades old IP. Like everyone says, everything rides on Prometheus. If that proves that an unusually excellent film that was mostly a result of accidentally combining exceptionally talented individuals with the ability to browbeat the execs anda social climate unusually receptive to actual sci fi can be repeated in the day and age that sees however many million dollars spunked on a fucking BATTLESHIP MOVIE, then maybe this could be pretty good? It's a fertile universe, thats for sure. Just keep joss whedon the hell away from it.
demagogue on 23/5/2012 at 00:15
Speaking of which, is it just me or does anyone else get physically uneasy when a Battleship trailer comes on? Doesn't have to be full on nausea, but like your gut is actually trying to push it away as it goes on, and the ugh sound starts creeping up your blowhole. I wish I were exaggerating.
Slasher on 23/5/2012 at 03:38
I didn't even think battleships were still in circulation. I guess it's more marketable than GUIDED MISSILE CRUISER.
Hey, at least you guys probably don't have to deal with it at work. My employer is doing some kind of promotional tie-in with the movie. We're talking two completely unrelated industries here, UGH. :(

After enduring a decade's long reign of comic book sci-fi, I'm ready for anything else, even if it's yet another android flick.
Blade Runner has sequel potential. The setting and visual style still hold up pretty well after 30 years, Deckard & Rachael's plot lines were left open, we never saw the colonies, and some of the film's other themes haven't been mined as deeply as artificial life & the nature of humanity. But the story could be completely new for all I care. Just keep the setting, shot length, and make it somewhat intelligent.
