Whatsup with toasters that have the light/dark adjustment knob? If you used the dark setting the toast would end up completely black and inedible not to mention would burst into flames and set off smoke alarms.

I would think some breads toast faster than others, so for some really heavy or fruit or nut bread maybe you'd need the highest setting to get it very dark, but it wouldn't blacken.
I mean, I guess ... who aside from a toaster engineer actually studies the thermodynamics of toasting bread? You could experiment.
