Sorry if it's a dumb question, but I recently discovered that crates can be broken if I whack them enough times with my sword. So are there any crates that actually contain something inside them?

Nope.

No, not in any original missions at least.
EDIT: One. minute....

As far as I remember, in OMs only big crates in Shipping... and Receiving cointain... items.

Those are crate-shaped chests though. No crates in any Thief games release items when smashed.

Yes, you are absolutely right.
I remember some very, very old FM with smashable crate(s) that contained some important object. I guess it was something from Dashjianta and Banshee times. :)

I thought that was where you got the bow upgrade?
Pretty sure that's where I got it from.

Yes, you're right!
It was in the Alarus Extension.

Haha, I remember that. Goddamn the Alarus extension is hard to get into.
I think I remember in Midnight in Murkbell, there's a holy water inside a crate you can smash, in the Museum.

Bloodsport Prison had a room full of crates that contained all sorts of different items. I think there was a crate that had holy water in Midnight in Murklbell. But as a general rule crates don't contain anything.
