It's happening everywhere, and the practitioners aren't always affiliated with a god.
Are you confusing "divine" with "good?" That's a common misconception, ya know. Divine simply implies a deific connection in magic use; the deity and person have to be of similar alignment to their deity to be able to use their powers. I'm guessing the Builder is Lawful Neutral and the Trickster is Chaotic Neutral; I'm assuming they're neutral because both Good and Evil have been seen in their followers, so that's the most logical inference I can make.

Nope. Not confused.;) GODs are what was in the forefront of my mind, are why I mentioned belief systems and that they give the practitioners their determination. Belief in a higher power is the reason for their dedication to the arts, and the reason for their discipline to learn how to conjure, but the GODs don't provide the magic for their faith. The magic is a common part of the infrastructure of that world. It is common and widespread because it's part of the make-up of that world.

Can't say that!
i got a big telling off for putting more real-life views into thief there for you should get a nasty telling off my someone with bad manners too!
well.. i haven't got bad manners so, it can be me ^_^

I'm not denying magic or gods or spell-casting at all, so where's the excess real life in that?:D

nothing in thief to prove that at all ^_^ Hammers believe (seam to and they do call it the 'builders magic') there magically power comes from the builder and it is granted to them for there faith in him.
I already tried to comment on the view of magic from the sky, magic from the earth, magic from the spirit world, magic from the demon world etc stuff and got told off ^_^
just making sure you don't get a bad rep like i seam to have gotten... which seams to have completely ruined my rep on my own primary field ¬_¬;
jtr7 on 21/3/2009 at 21:32
What what what?:weird: Ease up. :D
My proof is that there's no proof gods have anything to do with it...it's an easy assumption, because Thief has RPG roots. Even the godless in the game can use magic.
I already have a reputation as an insufferable pedant. :sly:
ManicMan on 21/3/2009 at 23:15
i noticed fantasy roots but not RPG ones.. anyway, just because there is more then one type of magic doesn't mean a thing...
sorry if you think i'm getting at you but i guess with a few 'personal' things going bad, me noticing how others seam to be allowed to get away with more is kinda putting me on edge.. don't worry, i'll try to control myself and i'll have everything worked out soon ^_^
In Thief, i don't remember any 'godless' people using Magic. the Hammers believe in the Builder, the Pagans (who don't seam to use magic much at all) have the Trickster (which is the same reglion as the Hammers), the Mechnists also have the Builder, the Hand Brotherhood do seam to be the odd ones out BUT some of there uses of magic and comments about Prophecys (or more, the one that seams to be commenting on the return of the Trickster) hints they are either like the Keepers and don't 'Believe' in the gods, but KNOW of them as creatures/people OR they don't understand where they get there magical powers from. Keepers don't seam to use any magic at all (Until DS.. but then DS had them using Hyroglyths to hid there buildings.. something not commented on before and something that seamed... out of place.. They seamed to be very good hiders and stuff (from notes and such like) but not using glyths to put spelling on stuff... oh well.

You seem to be discounting the Glyph Seals (?) that the Keepers made to seal off the Haunted Cathedral.

Keeper Andrus,
We are relieved to hear that you have successfully contained the destruction. It was for just such a contingency that the Elemental Wards have been saved these many years, and we support your decision to use them now, as the peril that you have described is grave indeed. We urge you to hide the Talismans with great care, as their discovery could lead to another such catastrophe. We worry also that your actions have exposed the truth of our existence to the world, which we must not allow.
Yours in knowledge,
Keeper Lukas

No, you were corrected, and adivsed that there is a lot of in-game evidence directly COUNTERACTING your ideas. And then you basically did the online equivalent of jamming your fingers in your ears and saying "I CAN'T HEAR YOU."
And now you're misrepresenting it. I'm sorry if you took offense, but when you say things that go directly against what is shown, written and spoken about in the games, before we get to the extrapolation stage, I asked if you've played through themwith any degree of depth or if you were just making stuff up on the fly. I will admit that it was typed with no small exasperation, as you seemed to completely miss the point, and I was unsure if it was intentional or that you were oblivious.

Right now, with me, you have not the best rep because you continuously use poor spelling and poorer grammar. Add to that the fact that you seem to enjoy getting under people's skin, as your comments in this thread have shown, and I have to wonder if you're intentionally trying to get a rise,or if you're just enjoying the attention.
