I've already got the disks, but it is good to know about these rather less than positive aspects of online Thief purchasing. Does anyone know if all the copy protection screws with FMs? That would just be a travesty.

the games are so old and cheap nopw there is now reason to look for non-legit versions,
Don't you mean "no" not "now" ?
It doesn't matter whether people believe it's okay because it's an old game, it's still illegal. So to even claim that it's okay to download thief for free for any reason at all is wrong.:)
No, just because the game is called thief, doesn't mean you can steal the game.
Not to mention the fact that you can't talk about illegal downloads on TTLG.

If only GOG.com could get their hands on Thief...they are a thoroughly legitimate service that has a bunch of old games, with NO digital rights crap attached. They have a bunch of good stuff, too (though the only ones I've gotten so far are Beneath a Steel Sky and Curse of the Enchantress, which the original company has now released as freeware), like Blake Stone, Rise of the Triad, and even some really old adventure and strategy games (including Castles and Castles II, which I thought NOBODY cared about anymore). All the games are reasonably priced, which is what the real method of selling these things should be. No one wants to buy an old game for twenty bucks, but five to ten? That's fine with me. It's about as good a deal as XBox Live or the PS Store, except for games I actually want to play.:cheeky:
Trouble is, the companies have to officially release their software through them (I'm guessing there's some sort of exclusivity contract they sign), and the chances of anybody willing to do that for Thief is probably very slim indeed.

To the original poster:
Did you *know* the game would come with this activation stuff attached before you purchased it? If they did not make this specifically clear, and I were you, I would raise hell.
I'm sure it was hidden in the TOS though.

I hate to play devil's advocate here but these 'licensing agreements' may be one of the last strings holding the pc gaming industry together. In case you havn't noticed, people don't buy pc games anymore when it's faster (and obviously cheaper) to download the torrent. To bad the honest folk have to suffer. Still, if the PC industry goes under, I quit:P

Thief13x- You are probably right, but at some point it ceases to be a benefit to the industry and just becomes pointless red tape. We don't want them to abolish the system, just for them to easy up a bit.

Very true, agreed. I would hate to see it go down in flames set by people who feel they shouldn't have to pay for media. Better to go down with the dignity asserted through pay for it or lose it.
sorry sneaksie, let's hope for the best together :D

The solution is to give paying customers benefits that non-paying customers cannot access. The problem is actually implementing this... it would be very tough. Perhaps they could have downloadable content which is only available with a valid CD key, but then the players will just share that. I personally think that if games were made cheaper, they would sell *many more copies* and be able to offset the price reduction.

Alright lads, keep your pants on! I don't agree with illegally downloading games, Thief Gold for me was an exception because I honestly couldn't find it anywhere else. It's sad that the game is no longer being published but I disagree that that should mean it cannot be played.
