I used to have a similar problem in FF Tactics, the original PS1 one, but then I realised that most of my people didnt really matter all that much, save for the main people and the "collectibles."
::a la Borat:: I play like-a man, with hair on chest.

I usually make damn sure I have an exit strategy planned before entering a situation so I can run, in cases where I am forced by the game designer I will fight if I have to, I will kill if I have to, I will reload if I have to

I usually use a flashbomb and hide, climb up somewhere or jump into water (which wouldn't be very clever in Thief DS, I know) and watch the guards search for me until they lose the nerv and give up.
If whatever happened screws up the whole level and some alarm system unnerves me for hours (I nearly grew deaf in Ramirez' house once) I rather reload.

If -against all my efforts- my impatience gets the better of me and I get seen, it's flash-bomb, run and hide, and wait for the commotion to settle down.
Nowadays I also try to play the games without reloading - just go with the flow, see what it brings.

I'm a perfectionist; I usually just reload *shame*. Especially in cases where not reloading means killing a guard. It's just his job! ;)
Though reading other comments here has sort of pursuaded me to take a bit more of a risk playing through the game, which I intend to do next time through. You're not a true thief if you have to reload on quick-load...

Normally I reload when I get caught, but as I mentioned elsewhere, one of my very best experiences in the whole series happened while playing T2 a few months back. I was in First City Bank & Trust, had completed all of my objectives and was on my way out.
I was lurking in a dark corner in a hallway at the other side of that balcony/walkway on the second floor which has a window with a camera behind it when a guard bumped into me.
On a whim I didn't reload - I beat him half to death with my blackjack, fully intending to kill him and reload (expert difficulty) but he managed to run away. I chased him around that walkway and into the long hall with the 'hump' on the floor where he met a bow wielding friend.
At this point I decided that discretion was the better part of valour and ducked into the bar area and (without knowing it was there) stumbled across the balcony overlooking the main entrance hall of the bank.
I leaped down (taking quite a bit of damage) and the last things I heard as I dashed out the front doors (which I had luckily picked at the start of the mission for no reason whatsoever - I intended to go out via the roof) was the sound of an arrow clattering against the marble floor as the alarms started going off.
That was an experience which left my heart pounding. If I had died from the fall or from being hit by an arrow I could simply have quickloaded, but by doing that I would have tied myself into going out the stealthy way - a good 15 - 30 minutes of extra gameplay.
It was just a lucky combination of events and the result gave me a great little gaming memory.

Entirely depends on the level I'm playing and how snarky I feel that day.
In T3 I generally flashbomb and run, or try and employ the advanced physics of that game (I heart oil flasks on stairs, they make me happy). With the exception of the Cradle. For the Cradle, I reload like nobody's business, and get out of there a.s.a.p. And I don't worry about it. Because that level scares the bejeezus out of me. :wot:
For the other two games, it depends on how I'm feeling. I've recently gone on a bit of a ghosting kick, and I can't stand anything but perfection when I feel like playing that way.
Does anyone do what I call "suicide runs"? I.e. quicksaving before entering unknown territory, running in there like a maniac, looking for loot, and then reloading after having scouted the area and attracting the attention of about 8 guards? I think I started doing this because I played T2 first, and sorely missed the scouting orbs in the other two games.

Hell, I just do that for fun! I can usually take on 3+ guards (max ive done is about 8-9) with my sword and come out with only a wee health lost. 1337 swordsmanship skillz here. (like 17 ranks) reeefeeerrreeenceee...

I'll only reload if I die (duh):nono:
I always run. Haveing playing through Thief gold and Thief 2 so many times, I pretty much know where everything is, where to run etc etc..
