I love Doom, System Shock and Assassin's Creed. Each is great in their own way.
Of the AC's, Brotherhood so far is my all time favorite (as I've stated countless times). Yet to play 4.
For me the AC's were best when there was more back story going on of the Templar's meddling with things throughout the ages (as you would come across as rewards for completing the glyph puzzles). Removed after Brotherhood sadly :(.
And I can see AC's influence on fantastic games like Metal Gear Solid 5.

To say that all games you dislike are mindless is begging the question. Why not just title this thread "anyone who doesn't like the exact same games as me has inferior taste" and drop the façade of this being a discussion.

In what sense are Doom and Duke 3D not mindless? I enjoy those games, but trying to pretend they're somehow more intelligent than the games of today is just absurd.

One thing not really discussed yet is how much quality control has improved since the 1990s. Although many of my favorite games were made in the 1990s, I also remember enduring lots of bugs and patches and driver/compatibility issues. It seemed like studios were in a hurry to get games to market and we let them get away with using customers as their QA team. Back in the 90s, I almost never purchased games on their release date, waiting for the wave of early patches to pass before pulling the trigger. Today's games seem to have much better initial quality.
Likewise with hardware. It seemed like plenty of hardware was getting released with half broken drivers, particularly with video and sound cards.

I can't help but find that comment hilarious in between playing Fallout 4.
It's generally true, though. FO4 is the exception.

Well, Doom at least is not a corridor shooter. It's very much a keyhunt. There's no arrow to point your way, and lots of secrets sprinkled around. There's a minimap, and you need it. Honestly, Doom was rather less mindless than Doom 3.

Nobody was saying Doom was a game demanding of high level intellect or anything of the sort. Its about having standards, primarily in gameplay, which seems to be lacking in some here, just as it is lacking in the games of today. I can accept areas of design being lacking in any given experience, but too many lines are intentionally crossed today. If you value gameplay and the innovation of it (which is what this medium is all about), Assassin's Creed isn't the game for you.
Don't act like this is all an alien concept.

Careful, there's probably some here that will take issue with such statements.

There's irony here. I'm not calling it mindless because I dislike it. I dislike it because it IS mindless (in gameplay).

Both Doom and Doom 3 are pretty mindless. That's part of why they're fun.

Many of them can even manage the feat without insulting everyone who disagrees with them.
